Rodri’s comments show Manchester City have put themselves in the ideal position to close out the season Manchester City is currently preparing to face Arsenal on Sunday. The game at the Etihad is the first step of the final push of this season for the treble winners. Pep Guardiola’s side are seeking to defend the treble they won last season. In an interview published on mancity.com, their midfield general spoke of what comes next this season. Rodri’s comments have highlighted the fact that Manchester City find themselves in possibly the ideal position to launch into the penultimate stage of the season.

Speaking with mancity.com, Rodri explained that the world champions are ideally placed to attack what comes next. The games will come thick and fast for the champions over the closing stages of the season. Manchester City find themselves in the position they set themselves for at the beginning of the season. Rodri explained: “The target for us is to put ourselves into a position where we can fight until the end. This is something we have been working on and to arrive in this moment. Now is the moment that we have to do the last push. The goal is to fight for everything.”

Rodri also explained that City’s goal is to take it step by step as they seek to defend the treble. He added: “Our objective is basically this. If we were able to show that we could win everything we won last season, then why can’t we do it again? Of course, it’s incredibly hard to do. The world of football is very difficult, but we’ll take it step by step.”

The Spanish international also explained that Manchester City have reached the position they wanted to be in ahead of the final months of the season: “The most important thing is that we’ve reached this part of the season still in every competition, which is exactly the position we wanted to be in.”

At the start of the season, defending the treble seemed a distant possibility for Manchester City. Only two teams have ever achieved the prestigious feat. To repeat last season’s heroics, Pep Guardiola’s side had to be well positioned ahead of the final stages of this season.

His team has done that. With an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea to come and a UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid on the horizon, the opportunity is there for City to progress in both competitions.

In the Premier League City sit one point behind league leaders Arsenal. The Gunners are set to visit the Etihad this Sunday. A victory against Mikel Arteta’s side could be the ideal launching pad for the remainder of the season for the champions. If you were going to offer Manchester City the ideal position to launch into their treble defence at the start of season, they may have chosen the very one they find themselves in currently.
