Resurgent Roma maintained their noticeable upturn in form under new manager Daniele De Rossi with an emphatic 3-0 win against promoted Frosinone. Giallorossi bounced back from last weekend’s 4-2 home defeat to runaway Serie A leaders Inter to keep up with fourth-placed Atalanta.
Roma endured a sluggish start to the match, letting Frosinone control the tempo and create several promising goal chances. However, after Eusebio Di Francesco’s side failed to convert their openings, the visitors took the lead late in the first half through a moment of brilliance from Dean Huijsen.
The Juventus loanee dribbled past several Frosinone players before unleashing an unstoppable strike from mid-range to put Roma in front at the break. Though Giallorossi didn’t create many opportunities in the second half, they were ruthless in front of Stefano Turati’s goal.
Sardar Azmoun latched on to a rebound to make it 2-0 in the 71st minute after Turati denied Bryan Cristante’s long-range effort with an unconvincing diving save. Ten minutes later, referee Antonio Giua penalized Caleb Okoli for a handball on the edge of the box, giving Leandro Paredes a perfect chance to return to the scoresheet.
The Argentine midfielder embraced the gift, sending Turati the wrong way to seal Roma’s scintillating triumph. Now it’s time to look at our player ratings.
Mile Svilar – 7.5
Got away with a sloppy mistake midway through the second half, but the rest of the evening was nothing short of remarkable as he made numerous vital saves in his second Serie A appearance this season.
Rasmus Kristensen – 6.5
Despite displacing Rick Karsdorp at right-back, the Danish defender failed to offer an improvement on the Dutchman, especially in the attacking sense.
Gianluca Mancini – 7
Spent most of the game on the edge of a booking and eventually picked one in the second half, as he was too aggressive from the get-go for no good reason.
Dean Huijsen – 7.5
Much more composed than his center-back colleague, the prodigious rearguard enjoyed a superb game. Scored an exceptional goal in the manner of a world-class forward to open the scoring.
Angelino – 6.5
Despite performing far better than last week against Inter, the RB Leipzig loanee struggled against Matias Soule while having no influence on the opposition’s third.
Leandro Paredes – 7
Slotted home another penalty to take his seasonal tally in Serie A to three. Other than the goal, he failed to do anything noteworthy. However, his defensive commitment was commendable.
Bryan Cristante – 7
One of his liveliest showings in a while! In addition to his usual defensive contribution, he wasn’t afraid to go forward and get involved in offensive movements for a change.
Stephan El Shaarawy – 6.5
Back to his favorite left-wing position, the ex-Milan star displayed glimpses of his brilliant technique and pace on multiple occasions, albeit had nothing to brag about.
Sardar Azmoun – 7.5
Assumed Paulo Dybala’s role in the team and excelled, especially in the second half when Roma had much space on the counter. Quick to get onto a rebound inside the Frosinone box and grab a well-deserved goal.
Tommaso Baldanzi – 6.5
Not as eager to impress as you’d expect in his maiden Roma start but drew a penalty to send Paredes to the spot, which killed the game off.
Romelu Lukaku – 5
Undoubtedly one of his weakest performances of the season! Made too many technical blunders and couldn’t connect with his teammates in a wayward first half.
Lorenzo Pellegrini – 6.5
Diego Llorente – 6.5
Zeki Celik – 6
Chris Smalling – N/A
Houssem Aouar – N/A
