Fabrizio Romano revealed that Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo rejected Newcastle United, Arsenal and several clubs in favour of Manchester United. The Red Devils have started the summer transfer window strongly by quickly signing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and targeting Mbeumo.
United’s incisive movement in the market has surprised many fans and pundits, due to past talks about their financial issues. However, Man United have prioritised backing their new manager, Ruben Amorim, by providing him with the players his tactics need.
The current United squad failed to adjust to Amorim’s philosophy, but they were already short on faith before his arrival. United have struggled with persistent inconsistency, which crossed all thresholds last season when they finished 16th in the Premier League.
The United hierarchy has decided to back the new manager with the idea of selling their surplus to raise funds. However, the Red Devils have wisely decided to move quickly and prioritise the attacking department at the early transfer stages.
After signing Cunha, United made a bid of £55m for Mbeumo, which Brighton have now rejected, demanding a higher fee. According to the Mirror, Brentford are holding out for a valuation of around £60 million for their prolific 25-year-old attacker.
Many rival fans have criticised United’s transfer spending and argued that the reported £250kpw salary swayed Mbeumo towards Old Trafford. While some argued that clubs like Newcastle and Arsenal never pushed for the Cameroon international, who contributed 29 goals and assists last season.
According to Romano (via YouTube), Mbeumo rejected Newcastle and Arsenal to join United from Brentford due to his desire to play at Old Trafford. He said:
“Bryan Mbeumo wants to go to Manchester United. This is the decision of the player, he wants to wear the shirt of Man United, he wants to play at Old Trafford, despite approaches from Newcastle, Arsenal and more clubs. His priority is Manchester United. He has an agreement with Manchester United and (they’re) now working to get the deal done.”
Romano’s clarification has ended the whataboutism that rival fans have instigated to counter United’s power to lure top players. There is a justifiable argument about the wages that the club are potentially paying Mbeumo. Nevertheless, the Red Devils need to maintain their focus on improving the squad and not letting last season repeat itself.
