Fabrizio Romano revealed that the price tag was the reason Manchester United backed off from signing Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres. United are targeting a number nine to bolster their attacking department under Ruben Amorim and end the recent season’s struggle.

United signed Joshua Zirkzee last season to help Danish forward Rasmus Hojlund, after his first underwhelming season at the club. However, both number nine failed to establish themselves as the regular forward under Amorim after United sacked Erik ten Hag.

Amorim has decided to make drastic changes within the squad, due to their failure to adjust to his tactical philosophy. The Portuguese have focused on the attacking department first, signing Matheus Cunha and nearing a deal to acquire Bryan Mbeumo.

We All Follow United previously covered that recent reports suggest Gyokeres has opted to sign for Arsenal for a £68.3m deal over Man United. The 27-year-old has decided to put next season’s Champions League football over a reunion with Amorim in Manchester this summer.

Amorim played a pivotal role for Gyokeres in his steep rise to success, becoming a lethal striker under the manager. Their time together at Sporting Lisbon brought success and stability, establishing the club as one of the top Portuguese institutions.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that United backed off from signing Gyokeres from Sporting due to the price. The football transfer news expert revealed that the Swede never rejected United, but only chose Arsenal for the Champions League. He said:

“The priority of Viktor Gyokeres would be to go to Arsenal because of the Champions League football, but he never rejected Manchester United. But what’s the point for United? The price is really important for them because now, as of today, their focus is on closing the Bryan Mbeumo deal as soon as possible. United are in the process of that, and then in terms of budget, it’s going to be important to understand how much they can spend on the striker.”

There is no denying that United remain a powerhouse in attracting big talents despite their Premier League struggles last season. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League, a place far below their immense stature as a football elite.

Romano has also revealed that United want to sell their surplus first, after signing Mbeumo from Brentford. Rest assured, new reports suggest that United have shifted their attention towards other forwards with Ollie Watkins on their shortlist.
