Roy Keane is synonymous with the most dominant era in Manchester United’s modern history, a figure whose name is woven into the fabric of Old Trafford.
For many fans, it feels almost impossible to separate Keane from the red shirt.
Yet behind his success at United lies a footballing upbringing that took shape long before his rise to superstardom.
And it turns out those early loyalties were pointed in a very different direction.
Despite becoming one of Manchester United’s greatest-ever players, Roy Keane has now revealed that Tottenham Hotspur were the club he supported growing up.
The Irishman, whose also been very critical of United’s coaching staff, never played for Spurs at any stage of his career, choosing instead to finish his time as a player at Celtic.
His legacy at United remains untouchable, built on 326 appearances and a trophy haul that includes seven Premier League titles and a Champions League crown.
Keane’s leadership defined an era, making his admission all the more unexpected for those who associate him so closely with the red half of Manchester.
Speaking on the latest episode of Stick to Football, on YouTube, Roy Keane made the confession in typically blunt fashion.
“I’m a Spurs fan, I followed Spurs when I was a kid.”
There was no attempt to soften the statement or dress it up for United supporters listening in.
Supporting a club as a boy and becoming a legend elsewhere are not mutually exclusive.
Keane’s revelation does little to change how he is viewed at Old Trafford, where his commitment and influence remain beyond question.
For United fans, his loyalty was proven on the pitch, not in childhood bedrooms or schoolyard debates.
And while Spurs may have had his heart as a youngster, Manchester United undeniably had his prime.
