Manchester United legend Roy Keane is in mourning after the tragic passing of his mother, Marie Keane, who passed away peacefully at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice.

A real family man, the former midfielder maintained a close bond with both of his parents and would often return to his hometown to visit them.

Maurice “Mossie” Keane, Roy’s father, died in August 2019 after a long battle with illness and the 54-year-old has often spoken about his loving relationship with his parents.

On an episode of The Overlap in 2025, Keane became emotional when looking at a picture of his parents watching him from the sidelines and Ian Wright kindly consoled him.

On Friday, a notice on RIP.ie confirmed that Keane’s mother had sadly passed surrounded by her closest loved ones.

The obituary read: “Keane (Carhoo, Rathpeacon, Co. Cork); on March 27th 2026, peacefully, surrounded by her loving family and in the tender loving care of the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Anne’s Ward at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice.

“Marie (née Lynch); dearly loved wife of the late Maurice (Mossie) and beloved mother of Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy and Pat. Predeceased by her brother Pat, her niece Estella and her nephew Thomas.

“Sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, her great neighbours and friends.”

While visiting Marie back in 2022, Roy Keane posted a picture of the two on Instagram and captioned it: “The only boss I listen to”, which highlighted the bond he shared with his mother.

Referring to their brilliant dynamic, Keane has now taken to the social media platform to post a picture with his arm round his mum, who is sporting a smile. The caption reads: “You’ll always be the boss.”

A number of the Manchester United legend’s former teammates – including Gary Neville and David Beckham – have commented to send their condolences to the Keane family in such a difficult time.

Robbie Keane and Sir Mo Farah are also among the thousands of people to comment on the Irishman’s touching tribute to his mother.

“Sincere condolences to extended Keane and Lynch family on the passing of Marie,” wrote Rockmount FC, the club Keane played for in his infant footballing years in his hometown of Cork.

The obituary confirmed that the visitation will take place at O’Connor Bros. Funeral Home, North Gate Bridge on Monday 30 March between the hours of 6 and 7pm.

That will be followed by a requiem mass on Tuesday in the Church of the Resurrection, Farranree, and the family have asked for donations to Marymount University Hospital and Hospice instead of flowers.
