Ruben Amorim called out for ‘personal’ grudge against sidelined Manchester United star

Paul Parker is adamant that Ruben Amorim has a ‘personal’ grudge against Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo

Manchester United have always taken pride in developing young talents who play with purpose. Yet under Rubén Amorim, that tradition now faces a silent test. Kobbie Mainoo, the promising academy graduate who once brought calm and control to United’s midfield, now sits on the fringes. Once celebrated as the next local hero, he now gets far fewer minutes.

Meanwhile, Paul Parker, speaking to the Express, voiced frustration over the situation surrounding the young English midfielder. The former United right-back said that Amorim’s treatment of Mainoo comes from something personal. Parker believes the manager simply does not rate him as a player, no matter his ability or potential contribution.

“We also have to ask why Mainoo hasn’t been used in that midfield. Somewhere along the line, because I’ve been looking at it, it has to be personal. It has to be personal, and the truth has to be told somewhere. He doesn’t like him, or he doesn’t like him as a player. It doesn’t make any sense at all.”

“It would cause big problems if they allowed Mainoo to go because he’s a local boy. But it’s not just about that, it’s about what he’s achieved in a short space of time, and he hasn’t been given the time and the respect.”

Amorim has started Mainoo in only one fixture this season, which was a Carabao Cup game. Reports from ESPN revealed that the manager’s tactical preference for a 3-4-3 system explains Mainoo’s exclusion. The Portuguese manager wants the young midfielder to improve his defensive positioning and speed of play before he trusts him in the Premier League.

Amorim treats Mainoo as a direct competitor to Bruno Fernandes and other midfielders for limited spots. GiveMeSport earlier reported that the 20-year-old tried to secure a loan move in the summer to get consistent minutes, but the club blocked his request. Now, with no January exit on the cards for Kobbie Mainoo as Manchester United block move, the frustration continues to grow. Mainoo shone brightly in his debut season for the first team and scored in the FA Cup final against Manchester City. So, the lack of game time now feels harsh and wasteful.

The cost of keeping a local talent on the bench

The issue is not just about the playing time of a young midfielder; this will affect the identity of the club, the trust in young talented players, and United’s long-term philosophy. Parker’s claims about Amorim having a personal issue with Mainoo clearly display the frustration that has crept in among the supporters regarding this situation. He insists Mainoo must “learn more,” which might make sense tactically, but if he continues not to provide the 20-year-old with proper game time, then United as a club will risk themselves losing a bright talent like Mainoo.

If United continue on this path, they will damage themselves. Mainoo’s exit would break an unbroken academy presence in every match day squad since 1937, and that record defines United’s spirit. The club would lose a player who has a bright future after years of hard development.

He represents local pride and potential. United still struggle for stability in midfield, but Amorim still keeps Mainoo on the bench instead of giving him a chance. The Englishman’s composure, creativity, and ability to carry the ball from deep could strengthen United’s midfield.

If the Red Devils lose him over managerial preference, it would be a painful mistake. Kobbie Mainoo, accused of being found out amidst a struggle to garner regular gametime, may sound dramatic. Yet the truth is simple: the club risks stalling their own progress. If Mainoo leaves, United won’t just lose a footballer; they will lose a piece of their identity.
