Ruben Amorim hints again that Man United star doesn’t fit his system, despite big turnaround

Ruben Amorim has not hesitated to sideline players when he feels it’s necessary, but there’s one player who, despite doing everything right, still doesn’t seem to fit in.

The 2025/26 season began with a goalless draw against Leeds United in Sweden, a match that saw debuts for Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon.

Amorim spoke positively about the potential partnership between Cunha and Bruno Fernandes and had encouraging words for Leon as well.

But even as others are taking notice of his progress under Amorim, questions remain about how well he fits into the manager’s long-term vision for the team.

Ruben Amorim still unsure of Casemiro’s role

Ruben Amorim made it clear early on how he wanted the season to look, and he backed that up by keeping Bruno Fernandes in a new position against Leeds.

Fernandes was paired with Casemiro in the middle, while Toby Collyer was pushed forward to allow Amad to take up a wing-back role, something we’re likely to see more of throughout the season.

Casemiro wasn’t poor against Leeds – he did create a couple of chances – but after the match, Amorim once again pointed out the lack of athleticism in midfield.

If you watched Amorim’s time at Sporting, you’d remember how Morten Hjulmand covered every blade of grass. It’s something Bruno Fernandes does as well.

It didn’t take long after Amorim arrived for Casemiro to fall out of favour due to his age and declining mobility.

But credit where it’s due: Casemiro worked his way back into the side and finished last season as a regular starter.

Still, no one can outrun time forever. With Amorim repeatedly raising concerns about mobility in midfield, it does not look promising for Casemiro going forward.

You have to respect how he fought his way back into contention last year, but it feels more like Amorim is making do with him rather than building around him by choice.

Man Utd need to find middle ground with Casemiro

The relationship between Amorim and Casemiro is one of mutual necessity, and both have managed to keep things steady, unlike the situations with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

Amorim has shown a willingness to adapt, while Casemiro has stayed focused and done his job without complaint.

This approach will need to continue for now. Casemiro’s contract makes a sale unlikely, and United don’t have many top-class options in midfield.

His experience can still be valuable, especially if the team is set up to cover his limitations and highlight what he does well.

If Amorim gets the new midfielder he wants, we might see Casemiro’s role reduced over time. Until then, this compromise looks like the best option for everyone involved.
