Ruben Amorim responds to Mason Mount’s backing after Manchester United win against Sunderland

Manchester United were under a lot of pressure coming into the game against Sunderland. The team eased some of it after their 2-0 convincing win at Old Trafford on October 4, 2024. Manager Ruben Amorim’s position as the Head Coach was in danger, and this victory should have eased some of the pressure on the Portuguese manager.

Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko scored the two goals for the Red Devils against Sunderland. This was the Slovenian’s first goal at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Amorim gave Senne Lammens his debut, and United registered their first clean sheet of the season, which gave the team a ray of hope ahead of the international break.

The United players displayed energy and discipline in this game, which was lacking in the previous matches of the season. In the post-match press conference, the manager praised his players for their constant effort on the pitch, and he reiterated that it is the most important important for the club right now. After the game, Mount backed the manager amidst growing scrutiny on his position. Amorim responded to the Englishman’s support and revealed that the players can only back the manager by playing well on the field and delivering consistently.

“I saw today and I know they want to do the best and I know they don’t want to change the coach all the time,” Amorim said. “… We need to show with actions. Sometimes when we look at our team, I know for sure that when we see the games, in the end, they know sometimes we can do better. I feel [the support] during the week, but we need to show it on the pitch.”

The Portuguese manager has been in the firing line following the disastrous results on the pitch, and there have been murmurs in the media that United are looking at the best replacements for Amorim. With every defeat and draw, the former Sporting CP manager felt even more pressure, and the fans started to lose patience with the team and the gaffer. This victory will definitely bring in a breath of fresh air for the manager and the team. It will also put a halt to the murmurs in the media at least till the international break.

Mason Mount leads by example

Mount’s movement, energy, and decision-making brought rhythm and control to United’s play. Since his £55 million move from Chelsea in July 2023, Mount’s progress at United has been slowed by injuries and inconsistent form. Yet performances like this show he can become a key player under Amorim. The 26-year-old’s opening goal set the tone for a disciplined and composed display that eased tension across the stands and inside the dressing room.

Amorim can only bring stability if the team maintains this level of intensity, especially amid reports like Paul Merson’s criticism of Oliver Glasner’s fit at Manchester United. United have been looking at several managers as the replacement for Amorim, and the current Crystal Palace manager is at the top of that wishlist.

As United prepare for a tough run of fixtures, including a clash with Liverpool, they must keep up this level of performance. Meanwhile, reports continue to float in the media as Gaizka Mendieta suggested that former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea would relish the opportunity to return to Old Trafford. The Red Devils were heavily linked to the Spaniard in the summer transfer window. However, for now, performances like Saturday’s give Amorim proof that belief in his project still exists in the dressing room and among the fans.
