Ruben Amorim outlines why Manchester United took off Bruno Fernandes vs Chelsea

Manchester United have endured a league season that has gone from bad to worse. With 18 defeats in the Premier League, the team have lost their way and has seen one target after another slip away. The focus, however, is no longer on the domestic championship. For weeks now, everything has been focused on the most important game left: the Europa League final against Tottenham. That match represents more than a title. It could mean the difference between another season without Champions League football and a chance to compete again at the highest continental level. That is why every decision, every tactical move and every line-up change is scrutinised.

In the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Ruben Amorim made it clear that he has his eyes on that European clash. Despite the result, the Portuguese coach was relaxed about the fitness of his players. Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw, Amad Diallo and Harry Maguire all started, while Mason Mount and Casemiro came on with the game well underway. Soon after, Amorim withdrew several key players from the field.

Purely tactical

There were no winces or signs of visible physical problems. According to The Standard, the decisions were tactical, designed to look after those he considers key for what lies ahead. Amorim confirmed there were no new injuries after the match. His plan focused on avoiding unnecessary risks. With five days to prepare for the final, the manager preferred to manage minutes and rest players who carry more minutes in their legs. This was not a concession, but a measured move to arrive with the most important players fresh and ready for the decisive match.

“We have to prepare for each competition, with five days, we can rest. We have five days to prepare [for the Europa League final], two days to fully recover and then two days to prepare. In the end I looked at all the players and I think they are ok.”

More Manchester United News:

From a practical standpoint, Rúben Amorim made the right call. Bruno Fernandes has been the beating heart of Manchester United throughout a turbulent season, the one player whose vision, work rate, and game-changing ability have remained consistent. Risking him in a largely meaningless league game against Chelsea, with a Europa League final looming, would have been a needless gamble.

Amorim chose to prioritise the bigger picture. With United’s last shot at silverware hinging on the clash against Tottenham, ensuring Fernandes is fresh and fully fit became the overriding priority. Rested and ready, the Portuguese playmaker can now step onto the pitch in Bilbao as United’s undisputed leader. His presence offers the team balance, creativity, and drive, qualities that will be crucial against a Tottenham side equally desperate for the trophy.
