Ruben Amorim’s midfield has lacked energy all season, and after missing out on Carlos Baleba, he suggested Mason Mount might be an option.
With Mount performing well higher up the pitch, especially in pressing situations near the opposition’s box, it would be a tough call to move him into a deeper role now.
Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte have both had their struggles lately, while Kobbie Mainoo has not quite locked down a starting spot yet. That leaves the question open about who should line up alongside Bruno Fernandes.
If Amorim is willing to take a risk, he might already have the answer within his squad – a player who could feel like a fresh signing in that position.
Lisandro Martinez last appeared for United back on February 2, just as he was starting to find his feet under Ruben Amorim.
The torn ACL he suffered against Fulham that day ended his season, leaving the Red Devils with a significant defensive void to fill.
There are not many at Old Trafford who can move the ball forward like Martinez, and his leadership and aggression bring qualities that do not show up on a stats sheet.
If all goes well with his recovery, there is hope he will be back on the pitch after the third international break wraps up in November.
With fewer than 10 Premier League matches played by then, Amorim will still have plenty of time to implement any tactical adjustments he has in mind.
Martinez fits that profile. He brings aggression and athleticism, and his range of passing is a real asset. Plus, being left-footed adds another dimension that Amorim wants alongside Fernandes.
The Argentine played in midfield during his time at Ajax, although he has not filled that role yet for United. But under Amorim’s system, defensive midfield is not strictly about sitting deep, it is more dynamic than that.
If Bruno Fernandes is given more freedom to push forward, Martinez could slot into a defensive-minded role while still contributing with sharp passing through the lines. It feels like a move worth considering.
Not only does Martinez fit the profile for Amorim’s defensive midfielder, but the move could suit him in the long term as well.
With Luke Shaw now back and managed carefully, there is hope he will settle into the left centre-back role. Ayden Heaven has also impressed enough to earn a regular first-team spot after stepping up last season.
Should Shaw face another injury, United possess sufficient defensive depth with Harry Maguire, Tyler Fredricson, and Noussair Mazraoui all able to step in.
Putting Martinez in midfield could give his career a new lease of life while addressing one of Amorim’s most pressing issues. It might be exactly what both player and manager need this season.
