Manchester United’s search for midfield reinforcements has taken another turn as the January window enters its final days.
With plans already in place to reshape the squad and experienced figures such as Casemiro set to move on, United have been exploring several options to strengthen the middle of the pitch.
However, one potential route has now been closed.
Manchester United had been loosely linked with a midfielder boasting extensive Premier League experience, a proven passing range and leadership qualities.
The midfielder that the Red Devils were considering and had contact with was former Wolverhampton Wanderers star, Ruben Neves.
A return to England had been discussed in recent weeks, particularly with the player believed to be open to a move back to Europe.
That scenario now appears unlikely.
According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, the Portuguese midfielder has agreed a new contract with Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League, committing his future with the Riyadh based club until 2029.
The extension effectively ends any short term hope of a move to Old Trafford.
Neves joined Al-Hilal from Wolves in 2023 in a deal worth around £47 million and has been a key figure since arriving in the Middle East.
He helped the club win the Saudi Pro League in his first season and has remained central to their plans.
For United, the appeal was clear.
Ruben Neves’ Premier League pedigree and familiarity with English football made him a low-risk option at a time where midfield departures were expected with Casemiro announcing this would be his last season, Manuel Ugarte being linked with a move abroad after struggling to settle in at Old Trafford and Kobbie Mainoo rumoured to leave when Ruben Amorim was head coach.
Newcastle United were also credited with an interest, but Neves’ decision to extend his stay means Premier League clubs must now look elsewhere.
With the window closing and priorities shifting, Manchester United will be forced to remove Ruben Neves from their radar and continue their midfield search through alternative targets.
The rebuild continues, but this is one avenue that is now firmly shut.
