Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney dream of leading Wrexham AFC to Premier League

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased Wrexham AFC, a Welsh club that competes in the fifth tier of England's football pyramid, during the COVID-19 pandemic and, thus, couldn't attend any matches until they watched their side fall to Maidenhead United on Tuesday.

Per Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN, McElhenney admitted to media members Thursday he was previously told it's unlikely Wrexham will ever climb all the way to the top of the pyramid and the English Premier League. He seemed to take such doubts as a challenge.

"I don't understand why, if that you can theoretically get there — we clearly have the structure and the system potentially to allow for us to grow at scale — why not dream big?" McElhenney explained.

The "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" series creator and passionate fan of sports teams from the "City of Brotherly Love" suggested there are similarities between followers of Philadelphia sports and Wrexham supporters.

"We love the idea of telling the story of a working class town and a working class club," McElhenney added.

Meanwhile, Reynolds commented:

"Sports is storytelling. When you take a deeper dive in Wrexham, you see just how inextricably linked the club is with the community around it. There's such a storied past here and there's so much room to grow again.

"There's a Cinderella aspect to it. There's an underdog story there that is powerful and potent."

The two are working with a documentary crew for a project about Wrexham and the local community scheduled to be unveiled in 2022.
