Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham due to the disastrous Premier League campaign

Did Tottenham make the right decision by sacking Ange Postecoglou? Only time will tell if the Lilywhites made the right call or not. But one thing is for certain… Big Ange did leave a good impression amongst the fans and the players. The Australian tactician understood what the club stood for and it is fair to say that he ‘dared to do’ what other top managers couldn’t.

The 59-year-old was always outspoken and he delivered on his promise of winning a trophy in his second season at a club. The Lilywhites won the Europa League last month and ended a 17-year wait for a major trophy against all odds. The trophy parade around N17 also showed that the ex-Celtic boss had managed to get the fans back on his side after enduring a lot of scrutiny in recent months.

Big Ange famously announced that ‘season three’ would be better than the previous two seasons during the trophy parade. However, Daniel Levy thought otherwise and sacked the Australian just two weeks after the Europa League success. Now, Spurs are back to square one and they need to find a replacement quickly as they look to kickstart a new era at Hotspur Way.

Roy Keane believes Ange Postecoglou deserved more time at Tottenham

One may argue that Ange Postecoglou deserved to get sacked after enduring a disastrous Premier League campaign for Tottenham. But in football, emotions and fan sentiment should be considered before making a big decision. And Daniel Levy failed to read the room before making the bold call to sack Big Ange just two weeks after the Australian ended the club’s long-standing trophy drought.

Now, Premier League legend Roy Keane also believes that the ex-Celtic boss deserved more time at N17 following the Europa League success. Speaking live on ITV Sport (as transcribed by 67 Hail Hail), Keane said,

“Winning a trophy for the club was a great day for the club and obviously the big plus was getting back in the Champions League. But they’ve felt the league form, not just this season but at the end of last season wasn’t good enough. It’s always sad to see a manager losing his job but you’d like to think Ange will be fixed up pretty quickly because he won a trophy. The league form hasn’t been good enough but you’d think the trophy would have given him an opportunity to stay a bit longer.”

Roy Keane suggested that the Premier League failures overshadowed the Europa League success and Champions League qualification at Tottenham. The ex-Man United star sympathised with Ange Postecoglou but insisted that the Australian would get a new job in no time following the European success. Keane added that the ex-Celtic boss deserved to lead Spurs next season after ending the trophy drought at the club.

Fans will now hope that Daniel Levy makes the right managerial appointment following Ange Postecoglou’s departure. Spurs are linked heavily with Brentford manager Thomas Frank and believes he is the right man to replace Big Ange at the helm for next season. It remains to be seen whether the negotiations with the West London club can find a breakthrough as Levy wants to hire the Danish tactician at all costs.
