Manchester United’s defence is struggling so far under Ruben Amorim, an issue consistently seen with the opposition easily able to capitalise on mistakes from the back line.

United’s 4-4 draw with Bournemouth was a perfect example, as in the 90 minutes, The Red Devils took the lead, and lost it, three times.

At the moment, Amorim is on the back foot however, with both Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt out injured, having to rely on teenagers Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven to hold his back line.

That said, the struggles have consistently been there since Amorim’s arrival and introduction of his 3-4-3 system.

Now however, alongside a prioritisation of recruiting to midfield, United are also looking to boost their defence, with scouts recently sent to Italy.

Gazzetta di Modena has reported that The Red Devils have had their scouts in attendance for Sassuolo’s recent trip to Bologna, with Tarik Muharemovic the player being tracked.

The report claims United emissaries watched the 22-year-old centre-back at the Dall’Ara, where he also got on the scoresheet, his second league goal of the campaign, in another eye-catching display.

United are not alone either, with Aston Villa and Bournemouth both reported with interest ahead of what is expected to be a competitive summer market for the defender.

Bournemouth’s interest is being compared to their recent Dean Huijsen deal, having signed him for £17.5 million (€20 million) from Juventus in 2024 before selling him a year later for more than £52 million (€60 million).

For Muharemovic, the appeal is obvious for Premier League sides, with his ability on the ball, and physical profile being traits that suit the speed and intensity of English football.

However, the same report suggests Juventus and Inter remain the Italian clubs in pole position.

Juventus are said to have a key advantage due to a 50% sell-on clause, while Inter are described as the side pushing hardest.
