Manchester City’s all-time record goal scorer, Sergio Aguero, was one of many players, past and present, to bid farewell to Kevin De Bruyne after he played his last game at the Etihad last night.
Since joining the club from Wolfsburg in 2015, Kevin De Bruyne has gone on to put his name firmly amongst the Premier League greats. A six-time league champion, the Belgian sits second in the all-time assist charts for England’s top division with 119, a number bettered only by Ryan Giggs.
De Bruyne has lifted 19 trophies during his time in Manchester, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one UEFA Champions League.
But now his illustrious career with the Citizens will come to an end after Sunday’s fixture away at Fulham.
Last night saw Manchester City defeat Bournemouth 3-1, Omar Marmoush scoring a goal of the season contender from distance. But the main event came after full-time, with De Bruyne commemorated by fans and team-mates alike for his incredible career at the Etihad.
An 11-minute video comprised of farewell messages from family, friends and former team-mates played on the stadium’s big screens. The likes of Fernandinho, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling wished De Bruyne well. Sergio Aguero also appeared, with the former City striker comically saying goodbye.
The Aguero and De Bruyne combination was one that graced the Premier League for six years and sent shivers down the spines of defenders during that period.
Aguero wished his old team-mate good luck during last night’s messages, telling De Bruyne, “Of course you are a legend at Manchester City. Ah, and me too!”.

“Kevin. Congratulations for your career. It was an honour to play with you”, the Argentine said more seriously. “I wish you all the best my friend”.
Fans of the Premier League will be able to recall just how dangerous De Bruyne’s ‘eye-of-the-needle’ passing was paired with the razor-sharp movement and finishing of Sergio Aguero.
In the Premier League, no Manchester City player benefited more from De Bruyne’s assists than Aguero.
19 of Aguero’s goals were put on the proverbial ‘plate’ by KDB, as the pair marched to three Premier League titles together.

Since Aguero’s departure, De Bruyne has gone on to create a similarly destructive attacking alliance with Erling Haaland – one that was central to City’s treble-winning campaign in 2022/23.
So while the Belgian’s career moves into its latter stages, Man City are actively trying to replace De Bruyne this summer – that, however, will be no easy task.
