There’s a good case to be made that Sergio Romero was the best backup goalkeeper Manchester United have ever had.
Romero joined United after the 2014 World Cup, where he started in goal for Argentina in the final against Germany.
He joined Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, having previously worked under him during their time together at AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands.
Even with that connection, it was clear Romero was coming in as a backup. There wasn’t much chance he would overtake De Gea, who was already established as one of the world’s top keepers by then.
He stuck around for six years between 2015 and 2021, and you could always count on him when called upon. Romero played his role well and handled everything thrown his way without any fuss or drama.
He did more than fill in between fixtures. When De Gea left, some wondered if maybe Romero should have been given a longer run to see what he could do.
The Argentine international felt hard done by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after being dropped from three semi-finals that season despite playing every round leading up to them.
After leaving United, Sergio Romero had a brief spell in Italy with Venezia before heading back to Argentina to join Boca Juniors in 2022.
Romero also linked up with familiar faces like Edinson Cavani, Marcos Rojo and even Ander Herrera. But after three seasons, his time at the club has come to an end.
The decision was made by mutual agreement as part of Boca’s efforts to reduce costs. Romero’s contract had been due to expire in December anyway.
He lost his starting spot under new manager Fernando Gago and later needed knee surgery. Since then, he’s moved on to sign with Argentinos Juniors, who were looking for a goalkeeper following an injury to their first-choice option.
The 38-year-old has agreed a one-year deal with Argentinos, who are currently 12th in the table after 13 games. Boca Juniors are sitting in fourth place.
Sergio Romero is looking forward to this next step in his career and feels motivated to prove himself once again, insisting that he’s already shown before that he can bounce back.
Speaking to Argentine outlet Ole, he said: “At first [at Boca] things went pretty well for me. When many people said Romero was finished, I showed them that I wasn’t finished, and now I’ll do the same at Argentinos.”
He could make his debut this weekend against Newell’s Old Boys, with a Copa Argentina semi-final against Belgrano coming up just days later.
During his time at Boca Juniors, Romero made 88 appearances and played a key part in their run to the 2023 Copa Libertadores Final. He also featured 61 times for Manchester United during his spell in England.
He’s the second former United player to leave Boca recently, following Marcos Rojo, who moved to Racing Club earlier this year.
