Danilo Cataldi dedicated his winning goal to Edoardo Bove in hospital, as Fiorentina squeezed past Cagliari for an eighth consecutive Serie A victory, their best run since 1960.

The Viola had won their last seven Serie A games before the meeting with Inter was abandoned due to Edoardo Bove’s medical emergency a week ago. They had already returned to the pitch on Wednesday, going out of the Coppa Italia to Empoli on penalties, and decided to rest Moise Kean with Albert Gudmundsson still not fully fit. The Sardinians were unbeaten in three, coming off a 1-0 victory over Verona.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Riccardo Sottil tested the goalkeeper from distance, though Roberto Piccoli also forced a David De Gea save from point-blank range and Antoine Makoumbou’s follow-up was deflected wide by Luca Ranieri.

Fiorentina finally broke through after a long period of possession when Lucas Beltran with his back to goal laid it off for Danilo Cataldi to sweep into the top corner from the edge of the area with the inside of the right boot. He rushed to the nearby television camera to send a message to Bove in hospital: “I told you!”

Jonathan Ikone twice tested Alen Sherri at the near post, while Yerry Mina and Adam Obert just failed to get on the end of a Razvan Marin free kick at the back post.

Gianluca Gaetano could’ve done better when nodding the Tommaso Augello cross over the bar, as the Sardinians pinned the hosts back seeking an equaliser.

Robin Gosens had the chance to seal it late on, only to get his header all wrong at the back post.
