Juventus clawed back a point with Juan Cabal, but 10-man Atalanta maintained their unbeaten record after the Kamaldeen Sulemana opener and Marten de Roon red card.
Both teams were unbeaten in Serie A this season, but the Bianconeri dropped points for the first time in a 1-1 draw with Verona. Francisco Conceicao joined Fabio Miretti and Arek Milik on the treatment table, but Vasilije Adzic was launched in the starting XI with Lois Openda and ex-Atalanta man Teun Koopmeiners. La Dea drew their opening games with Pisa and Parma, also losing 4-0 to PSG in the Champions League, but had back to back Serie A wins over Lecce and Torino. Ederson and Charles De Ketelaere were back on the bench, but Giorgio Scalvini, Isak Hien, Nicola Zalewski, Gianluca Scamacca and Sead Kolasinac were still injured.
Atalanta’s last defeat in Turin was in March 2018, followed by five victories and two draws, including a 4-0 result here last season.
It was almost the perfect start for Juve, as in the second minute Kenan Yildiz floated a cross to the back post for a Pierre Kalulu header off the upright.
Marco Carnesecchi got down to fingertip an Adzic snooker shot round the base of the far stick, then could only watch and hope as Khephren Thuram’s strike was deflected off Mario Pasalic and skimmed the woodwork.
Berat Djimsiti’s header flashed over from a corner and Adzic bent a right-foot finish wide, also testing Carnesecchi with a free kick around the wall.
Marten de Roon’s volley was charged down on the corner after a mazy Kamaldeen Sulemana run. That was a warning, as Atalanta took the lead in first half stoppages.
Ahanor caught Adzic napping in the final third and Sulemana twisted and turned to get the shot away, surprising Michele Di Gregorio. The former Sunderland man then celebrated his second goal of the season with some acrobatic back-flips.
Nikola Krstovic wasted a golden opportunity to double Atalanta’s lead, firing wide from the Pasalic assist, while Di Gregorio fingertipped a looping Pasalic header out from under the bar after a corner.
Raoul Bellanova also saw his header charged down in the six-yard box by Andrea Cambiaso, as when Juve pinned La Dea back, they struggled to test Carnesecchi and lost Gleison Bremer to injury too.
Juve did equalise eventually with a chaotic move, as Odilon Kossounou hit a fresh-air clearance on the Joao Mario ball into the box and it fell kindly for Juan Cabal, who reacted quickly to fire in from close range.
Moments later there was another big twist, as De Roon misjudged the distance from Weston McKennie and kicked him during an attempted clearance for an inevitable second yellow card, reducing Atalanta to 10 men.
It turned into a siege, as Carnesecchi made a desperate save on McKennie from point-blank range after a flicked-on corner, then fingertipped away the deflected Edon Zhegrova curler.
