Although he didn’t start the season particularly well, it’s safe to say Sheffield United have missed experienced defender John Egan this term.

The 31-year-old Irish centre-back featured just six times in the Premier League before going down with an achilles injury in the away fixture against West Ham United. And the chances are he won’t be making another appearance this season.

Blades boss Chris Wilder revealed to The Star on Thursday afternoon, “John Egan has started out on the grass today, doing early early rehabilitation. We can’t get too excited about John coming  back before the end of the season because I don’t think he will do.”

Wilder admitted how much of a blow it was for Sheffield United to lose players, such as Egan and Chris Basham, in terms of character and ability earlier in the season for an extended period.

Sheffield United have desperately missed John Egan this season

While the Irishman may have had a poor start to the campaign he has certainly been a miss. Since signing for the Blades back in the 2018/19 Championship campaign, Egan has been a massive part of the success the club has had.

For years, supporters have applauded Egan because of his availability. In his previous five league campaigns for United, the experienced defender has played in 94% of the team’s league games, highlighting just how dependable he is.
