Should Tottenham reignite interest in Premier League veteran midfielder under Thomas Frank? – Opinion
PA Images/Alamy Images

With Thomas Frank taking charge of the proceedings at Hotspur Way, club chairman Daniel Levy has been looking to ensure that he gives the Danish head coach all the needed arsenal to implement his playing style at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And the Lilywhites have been subject to links with a move for multiple players from Frank’s former side Brentford, with the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Nathan Collins and Wissa linked with a North London switch.

But the thing is, while there are a lot of Bees assets linked with a move to N17, it appears that the 51-year-old could pick out another player from the Gtech Community Stadium if reports are to be believed, as Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard has been among the rumoured discussions at Tottenham.

The Lilywhites, per CaughtOffside, are said to be preparing a bid to sign the Denmark international this summer transfer window as Thomas Frank looks to add an engine player into his second phase play. The report states that the North Londoners could test the waters at Gtech Community Stadium with a possible £17-20m bid despite the Bees being reluctant about selling the 31-year-old this summer.

But why are Daniel Levy and Tottenham this persistent about bringing in Norgaard? Well, let’s take a look at his profile and what he can bring to North London…

What makes Norgaard relevant at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

If we walk back to last season, Norgaard had been the heartbeat of the Bees midfield under Thomas Frank, where he was not only acting as a deep-lying screener but also setting the tempo with the ball whilst acting as a tactical glue in the multiple formations that the Dane deployed over the past seasons.

And the fact that he won 163 duels in the Premiership in the previous campaign made him an indispensable part of Thomas Frank’s midfield at West London.

But it’s not Brentford anymore, and at Tottenham the Bees skipper will likely be integral towards their transformation into a more compact and vertical system that Thomas Frank is set to implement given that he looks to bring some defensive stability at N17. And this is a low-cost, high-impact signing who can bridge the gap and reduce the transaction period.

How does Norgaard fare against the current options at N17?

Well, if we are talking about signing a veteran during a transitional period, we need to figure out the exact role that he could play and how he can marginally improve the team, so I will try to put a reasonable marginal comparison with the current options in the middle of the park at Thomas Frank’s disposal.

Let’s start with Yves Bissouma, who is more of the physical defensive midfielder at Tottenham, but he is quite inconsistent, and Norgaard is more disciplined and zonal about how he goes about himself.

Then we come to another veteran in the current squad, Uruguayan international Rodrigo Bentancur, who acts more as a hybrid box-to-box presence, but he has had his fair share of injury concerns, and he cannot run himself as much without niggles, and this is where the 31-year-old’s presence comes into play.

And coming to Pape Matar Sarr, he is more of your energy based interior but doesn’t provide as much defensively as Norgaard.

Author Opinion

Bringing in Christian Norgaard will not give you a marquee midfielder, but with him you get one of the most important tactical transition players that Daniel Levy can hand Frank. And with the cost that is rumoured, he is definitely a must sign.
