Tottenham Hotspur conducted good business in the summer transfer window to back new boss Thomas Frank. The Dane’s first phase of rebuild have gone well, with the club managing to shift some players out and replace them with exciting talents.
The north Londoners gave great emphasis to bolstering the attacking unit in the wake of Son Heung-min’s departure to MLS club Los Angeles FC, and the long-term injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski. Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani have been brought in to add to the squad’s firepower, whilst converting Mathys Tel’s loan from Bayern Munich into a permanent deal.
Apart from the signings, Spurs also did well to keep hold of some of their key names amid speculation over their futures. Cristian Romero is one of those players.
Cristian Romero was heavily linked with a summer move to Atletico Madrid. Diego Simone reportedly held private talks with the central defender to lure him to Atlético Madrid, but Tottenham remained firm in their stance not to sell him unless their valuation was met. The 27-year-old has since signed a lucrative new deal with at N17 and is a huge part of the club’s future.
The 2022 World Cup winner was later appointed as Tottenham’s new captain after Son departed the club after 10 long years. And renowned football analyst and commentator Ian Darke hails Frank for managing to keep hold of Romero. He exclusively told Tottenham News:
“I think it’s probably smart, shrewd bit of business again from Frank.”
“He’s looked at him and thought, I’ve got a real quality defender here. So they’ve spoken to him. They’ve told him, “Look, you’re the main man, you’re our captain, here’s a new deal, you’re going to be the highest earner at the club.”
“And I think that’s true. I think he’s liked everything he’s heard, and he likes the feel of Frank’s new wave, Tottenham. So I think I think he’s a pretty happy bunny. If he can be that key figure for Spurs, it’s all good news.
“I think last season, he looked like quite a disillusioned player who was just playing out his time with the club, and it looked like he’d definitely be on his way, but things change, don’t they?”
Recently, The Athletic reported about Tottenham’s best piece of summer business being able to convince Romero to stay at the club amid Atletico’s interest and sign a new deal. Indeed, the importance of keeping the Argentinean international at the club cannot be easily explained.
One of the best centre-backs in the world when fully fit, the 27-year-old captained the Lilywhites to the Europa League success back in May and remains hungry to win more titles in north London. Frank’s fresh ideas, tactics and system are ideal for him to thrive, and perhaps that was one of the major factors behind Romero’s decision to continue his career in the Premier League.
