Tottenham women have been linked with a move to bring in SK Brann midfielder Signe Gaupset to Brisbane Road in the upcoming winter transfer window. The North Londoners are said to be lining up a record-breaking 5 million krone (£378k) transfer for the 20-year-old who has been balling in Norway’s Toppserien.
The likes of Lyon, Barcelona, and Real Madrid had expressed interest in signing Signe Gaupset, but the 2005-born Norway international reportedly chose to move to Tottenham. She was said to be attracted by the prospect of opportunities in terms of playing time and her development in England in the WSL. Moreover, this move will also see her reunite with Tottenham women’s head coach Martin Ho, who was instrumental in her development at Brann.
And Tottenham women supporters have a lot to be excited about…
In Signe Gaupset, the North Londoners are potentially bringing in a highly technical presence in the middle of the park. She is a creative midfielder by trade and has a keen eye for both goal and creating chances. And if we look at her, she has that capacity to dribble and control the ball close to her feet. This is what helps her to come through tight spaces and get the better of defensive lines.
The 20-year-old midfielder has shown excellent vision and passing accuracy. She has been unlocking defences with incisive through balls and key passes. And then she has a strong ability to shoot. She has scored a few goals from outside the box, which will be an extra dimension to her attacking threat. Gaupset has the ability to put it on a plate for the teammates as well.
And tactically, she adds another later to Martin Ho’s side, given how she often comes deep to take the ball and then drives forward in space at pace. We have seen how good she is at understanding spacing and timing, especially knowing when to hold possession or when to intensify sequences into possible shots on the opponents’ goal.
But while she is a creative midfielder, she doesn’t shy away from defensive duties. She is good at pressing (and trigger presses) and having an opportunity to recover the ball. The 20-year-old fits into the high-intensity aggressive system, given her work rate and stamina to support more of a box-to-box role. This will allow the North Londoners to maintain pressure through the middle zones.
Given that she is only 20 years old, Gaupset is seen as one of the promising prospects on the rise. Her performances in the UEFA Women’s Euro and Champions League have gained a lot of attention. It was the composure and maturity beyond her years that she has shown for his nation as well as her current employers. And her choice to move to Tottenham over bigger clubs shows that she is hungry to prove herself while integrating into a system which we know suits her playing style.
As she comes in at Tottenham, Gaupset should bolster the attacking midfield options at Brisbane Road. She brings that sense of proven creativity and goal threat to the side. Moreover, having her on the pitch also gives Martin Ho a sense of tactical flexibility. And given that she already has played under him, she would come in and would be expected to make an impact straight away.
Her style suggests she could be groomed into an integral part of the roster at Brisbane Road for the next decade.
