Chris Sutton is a leading pundit and much like his playing days he always hits the target although these days it’s through words and not powering a header or thunderous shot past an opposing goalkeeper…
Chris was speaking this week about the lack of numbers in our squad and reiterated our own concerns over the lack of transfer activity and how vital it is that we bring in a few quality additions.
He said that Celtic should be burying theRangers in the transfer market and once again he was absolutely spot on.
It’s clear that theRangers are in fragile position at the moment due to the recent take over by US investors. They won’t throw money around like previous Ibrox custodians as the new owners set out to balance the books and make a return on their investment.
Celtic don’t have any such worries and need just three or four quality additions to further enhance a side that won last season’s title by a canter.
There’s no doubt that the additions of Kieran Tierney and Benjamin Nygren are significant and both are expected to play a major part next season. But there’s more needed and that’s before you factor in the possibility, or probability of one major sale as is the way at Celtic.
The other players that Celtic have been linked with could all broadly fall into the development category including the two Japanese players Hayato Inamura and Shin Yamada and the young Fulham striker Callum Osmand.
We have the means at our disposal to do more and nothing is holding us back from moving completely out of sight. Time to heed the big man’s words. Let’s bury them once and for all.
The Champions League must be the priority in the thinking and the ambition in the transfer market. Celtic got a taste for it last year and it’s essential we’re there again and we stand a decent chance due to our strengthening in this window.
