Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is facing a crucial week that might decide his fate at N17. The Lilywhites take on Manchester United in the Europa League final on Wednesday night. And it is fair to say that this game holds a lot of importance for the Australian and the North London club for more reasons than one. Ange’s men have the chance of ending the club’s long-standing trophy drought as well.
The ex-Celtic boss has led Spurs to their worst-ever Premier League campaign this season. They have registered 21 losses and are languishing 17th in the league table. The fans have also grown tired of the mediocre performances on the pitch and have showcased their frustrations on more occasions than one.
However, Tottenham has endured a successful European campaign under Big Ange. The Lilywhites are unbeaten at home in the Europa League this season and have managed to exceed all expectations to reach the final of the competition. They are now within touching distance of bringing European silverware back to N17 after 41 years. Winning the Europa League would also mean that Spurs would qualify for Champions League football next season.
There is no surprise that Daniel Levy has already started looking at managerial replacements for next season. The Lilywhites are linked with several managers as Ange Postecoglou’s job hangs by a thread. Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Fulham manager Marco Silva are two favourites to land the Tottenham job in the summer once the season ends.
But former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has backed Big Ange to survive the sack if the Australian manages to win the Europa League. Writing in his column for The Sun, Redknapp said,
“If Spurs do win, I think they might keep Ange Postecoglou … and he’d be silly to walk away. If they won this competition, and could add a couple of good players, they could have a really good season. Ange just needs to survive to have the chance to work with that team again. And I think he’d probably survive if he wins the final.”
Harry Redknapp suggests that Tottenham might not sack Ange Postecoglou if the ex-Celtic boss wins the Europa League final. The ex-Spurs manager also adds that Big Ange would be silly to walk away from the club, as they are only a couple of good players away from enduring a good season next year. Redknapp finally insists that the Australian must first win the Europa League final to survive the sack.
It was reported earlier that Daniel Levy would sack Ange Postecoglou once the season ended, irrespective of the outcome in the Europa League final. If that still stands true, then Big Ange has the chance of leaving N17 on a high and etching his name in the club’s history books. The Australian would also manage to keep his promise of winning silverware in his second season at the club if he leads the team to Europa League glory.
