Silva’s career record of 24 goals in 148 games is hardly prolific

Were Celtic interested in Silva? Who cares as he’s not what we need in this transfer window…

Wolves striker Fabio Silva yesterday signed a loan deal with our Glasgow rivals theRangers, and as you could imagine the deluded Bears have been boasting of how he ‘turned down’ Celtic. Celtic were apparently one of a host of clubs said to be interested in the Portuguese striker, but how concrete that interest was no one really knows.

That’s what happens when an agent knows his client isn’t wanted at his parent club and is told to find him a move, preferably one that will lead to a transfer and a chance to recoup some of the massive sums of money that’s been wasted signing the player.

But to be honest, Silva isn’t the kind of player we are in dire need of at the moment. He isn’t any better than the players we currently have in that position. That’s not sour grapes, far from it. The young man might have some potential, but his career record of 24 goals in 148 games is hardly prolific, and that’s what we need up top, a proven goalscorer. Fabio Silva is hardly that.

Is he any better than Kyogo or OH? No he isn’t and the stats back that up, so why would we sign a guy on loan with no option to buy, not to mention a loan fee and hefty salary just to have him sit on the bench? We wouldn’t and that’s exactly the reason why he’s not at Celtic Park.

So even if the club were interested, who cares? Maybe Celtic tool a look and politely declined the opportunity – if Celtic signed every player offered in a transfer window we’d have more players than the rest of the Scottish Premiership sides combined.

He’s not what we need, if he was then Celtic would have had more than enough to out muscle theRangers. We need to be aiming higher and need to be looking at experienced, quality signings and Silva has done nothing in his career to suggest that he fits what we’re looking for.

Silva is a failed Wolves project signing and a mightily expensive one at that. Signing him is a huge gamble and it’s one that theRangers have decided to take, but not one Brendan Rodgers, with his Premier League experience, reckoned was worth the risk.

So we move on to bigger and better things.
