Big ideas and bold slogans have not been in short supply at Manchester United in recent years, but not all of them have had the chance to materialise.

Sir Dave Brailsford’s time at Old Trafford is a clear example of that.

The INEOS sporting chief arrived with a vision built around structured success, introducing concepts like “Mission 21,” a plan aimed at delivering United’s long-awaited 21st league title, alongside “Mission 1” for the women’s side, targeting their first Women’s Super League crown.

Those ideas were presented as part of a wider performance strategy designed to reshape the club’s culture and bring it back to the top.

But the project never fully got off the ground.

Sir Dave Brailsford stepped away from his day-to-day role at United in June 2025 after just 18 months, following a broader restructuring led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has taken increasing control of football operations under the INEOS banner.

His departure was not just a strategic shift, it was also influenced by internal frustrations.

Ratcliffe was reportedly unhappy with decisions made alongside former sporting director Dan Ashworth, particularly the insistence on sticking with former manager Erik ten Hag during a turbulent period.

That tension ultimately contributed to Brailsford’s reduced role at the club, as focus shifted elsewhere.

Now, the 62-year-old has turned his attention back to a familiar environment, elite cycling.

In his role as Director of Sport for INEOS, Brailsford has launched a new initiative with Ineos Grenadiers, introducing “Mission 8,” a plan to secure an eighth Tour de France title, as reported by The Times.

It is a challenge that mirrors the ambition he once outlined at United, both in scale and difficulty.

Under their previous identity as Team Sky and later INEOS, the team dominated cycling’s biggest race, winning seven Tour de France titles between 2012 and 2019, including a historic first victory for Bradley Wiggins.

But the landscape has since changed dramatically.

The rise of Tadej Pogacar and the dominance of UAE Team Emirates XRG have made the path to another title far more complicated.

In many ways, the scale of that task reflects what Brailsford faced at Manchester United, attempting to restore a once-dominant force in an era where rivals have surged ahead.

The difference now is that he is back in a sport where his methods previously delivered sustained success.

For United, meanwhile, the “Mission 21” idea remains unfinished, another ambitious plan that never quite moved beyond the presentation stage.
