Pressure is building on Ruben Amorim at Manchester United following their latest setback, a 3-1 loss to Brentford.

The Red Devils sit 14th in the Premier League standings, having managed just seven points from their first six matches.

The defeat to Brentford adds to Amorim’s struggles, as he remains without consecutive league wins since taking over in November of last year.

With results not improving, questions about Amorim’s future have become more frequent, and attention has already turned to potential replacements at Old Trafford.

Gareth Southgate had been strongly linked to the role before Amorim took over, with former sporting director Dan Ashworth reportedly favouring him for the job.

According to transfer specialist Graeme Bailey, speaking to United in Focus, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has met with Southgate several times, including a recent meeting this month.

Southgate also has a close relationship with Sir Dave Brailsford, one of Ratcliffe’s most trusted advisors.

UIF has also learned that Michael Carrick is being considered as a short-term option if the club decides to part ways with Amorim.

Carrick previously served as caretaker manager following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure in 2021 and is currently available after being let go by Middlesbrough in June. He is believed to be open to stepping in if called upon.

Officially, despite a difficult start to the season, the club maintain their support for Amorim.

When Erik ten Hag was dismissed last season, Ruud van Nistelrooy stepped in as interim boss before Ruben Amorim was appointed from Sporting CP.

Now, should Amorim face a similar exit, Michael Carrick is being considered to fill the gap once again.

Carrick is not new to the role, and his brief spell back in 2021 showed promise. He won two of his three matches in charge, giving him a 66% win rate, a figure that stands out compared to Amorim’s current mark of 39%, with 19 wins from 49 games.

Meanwhile, Southgate remains out of work since leaving his England post, where he was succeeded by Thomas Tuchel.
