Manchester United’s recent upturn in form under Michael Carrick has given supporters hope on the pitch, but off it the club’s co-owner has once again sparked controversy far bigger than football.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s comments this week about immigration in the United Kingdom ignited a firestorm of criticism from politicians, fan groups and anti-racism advocates, forcing him into a rare public apology.

For United fans already frustrated by the way INEOS is running the club, the episode has added fresh unease about the club’s leadership and public standing.

This week’s developments underline how his words, and what they signal, have any consequences.

Ratcliffe’s comments emerged during an interview in which he claimed that the UK has been “colonised by immigrants” and suggested that high immigration levels were straining the economy.

The remarks were swiftly condemned by political leaders across the spectrum.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described them as “offensive and wrong” and explicitly called on Ratcliffe to apologise.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham joined the criticism, calling Ratcliffe’s comments “inaccurate, insulting and inflammatory.”

Anti-racism campaign groups also weighed in, warning that language like Ratcliffe’s echoed far-right rhetoric.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has now issued an apology following backlash over his comments on UK immigration.

Ratcliffe gave the following apology, as posted on INEOS’ official website: “I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth.

“My comments were made while answering questions about UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where I was discussing the importance of economic growth, jobs, skills and manufacturing in the UK.

“My intention was to stress that governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills, industry and jobs so that long-term prosperity is shared by everyone. It is critical that we maintain an open debate on the challenges facing the UK.”

With Premier League momentum building and expectations rising on the pitch, the fallout off it now presents yet another challenge for Manchester United’s owners  to navigate in the weeks ahead.
