Site of deadly stampede at soccer match in Indonesia to be destroyed

The president of Indonesia announced this week that the soccer stadium where over 130 fans were trampled to death will be demolished and rebuilt.

"We will demolish it and rebuild according to FIFA standards," President Joko Widodo said Tuesday after meeting with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, via ESPN.

Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang was the site of the deadly scene on October 1 when police fired tear gas into the stands at a game between rival teams Arema FC of Malang and Persebaya Surabaya. CBS Sports reported the investigation into the event concluded last week that "excessive and indiscriminate" amounts of teargas were used and were the main cause of death in the tragic event.

The report also noted that several exits were blocked and that the stadium was filled to over capacity.

Per CBS Sports, FIFA plans to work with the Indonesian government to make sure the new stadium meets safety requirements.

Indonesia is supposed to host the under-20 World Cup in 2023.
