Manchester United fired Ruben Amorim on Monday, and according to reports, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is an alternative to take over the job.
The Red Devils drew 1-1 against Leeds on Sunday, Jan. 4, and after the game, the Portuguese manager made some controversial statements. This led to a clash with the CEO and the director of football of the club.
“I just want to say I’m going to be the manager of this team and not just the coach. I was really clear on that. And that is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on,” was part of what Amorim said.
According to The i Paper Sport, Omar Berrada, CEO, and Jason Wilcox, director of football, already had doubts about Amorim’s system, and in the end, they fired him.
After Amorim's firing, different managers have begun to be linked with Manchester United, including a former coach: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And according to Rich Fay, Solskjaer is willing to take charge of the team. "Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be interested in a shock Manchester United return as caretaker head coach after the club parted company with Ruben Amorim," Fay wrote.
"Manchester World understands Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be open to a Manchester United return on a caretaker basis until the end of the season," he added. "It is not clear if he will feature on the club’s shortlist for the role, but he would be interested in potential discussions over a sensational return to his former club."
Subsequently, Fabrizio Romano confirmed this trend, stating that Solskjaer would be more than happy to take charge, and even points out that internal discussions are already taking place to decide the next steps.
Another manager who has been linked to the Old Trafford club is Enzo Maresca, who parted ways with Chelsea by mutual agreement in recent days.
"Enzo Maresca is interested in replacing Ruben Amorim as the manager of Manchester United," Graeme Bailey wrote for TEAMTalk.
According to the same report, Manchester United could leave Darren Fletcher in charge until the end of the 2025-26 season if it does not find a definitive, guaranteed substitute.
