Cristian Romero is hoping to lead from the front as Tottenham Hotspur seek further glory under Thomas Frankl

Cristian Romero surprised everyone at the start of the season by committing his long-term future to Tottenham. The Argentina international was linked with a move away from the Lilywhites all summer, even hinting at leaving for pastures new when the transfer window opened. However, the centre-back’s complete U-turn caught every Spurs fan off guard.

There were strong rumours linking Romero with Atletico Madrid throughout the summer. It was also reported earlier that Diego Simeone called the 27-year-old daily in an attempt to convince him to join the La Liga outfit for this season and beyond. It is fair to say that the Lilywhites were already preparing to find a replacement in case the Argentine did move on.

But to everyone’s surprise, the Spurs No.17 decided to stay put and become the face of the project under Thomas Frank instead. The Danish tactician even named Romero the club captain last month, putting to rest all speculation about the Argentine’s future at N17.

Cristian Romero is leading Tottenham from the front this season

Tottenham have endured a brilliant start to the season under Cristian Romero’s captaincy. The Argentina international has led the Lilywhites from the front in the opening games of the new campaign, with stellar performances against Manchester City and PSG serving as prime examples of the 27-year-old showing his teammates how to deliver when it matters the most.

The Spurs defender has now candidly shared what he believes makes him a good captain. When asked about his captaincy role at N17, Romero said (via Football.london),

“I think that I try and bring everyone together, of course. It’s the first time in my career that I’m an official captain, it’s something new. I’ve got a lot to learn about the role.”

The defender added,

“But I’m fortunate enough to have shared a dressing room with people in my national team, some top leaders in the club and in the national team as well, so I can take bits from those examples. It’s always a lot easier when everyone is moving in the same direction.”

Cristian Romero explained that he strives to unite the squad whenever possible and admitted that he is still getting to grips with the responsibilities of captaincy. The Spurs defender also highlighted the presence of other leaders in the dressing room, whose qualities he hopes to learn from as he develops into a stronger leader himself.

Romero may not be outspoken on the pitch for Tottenham. But the prolific centre-back always tends to speak through his consistent performances week in week out. Now, the Spurs No.17 will hope that the Lilywhites endure a strong campaign under his captaincy and build on the Europa League success this season.
