Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-Min Son has a chance of winning his first ever major trophy with the club this season. The South Korea international has gone through all the ups and downs at N17 since arriving in 2015. Now it feels like the time has come for the winger to lift the North London club’s first silverware in more than 17 years and end the long-standing trophy drought.
The Lilywhites face Manchester United in the Europa League final later this month. It is fair to say that Spurs have exceeded expectations in Europe this season. Ange Postecoglou’s men have the chance of doing the unthinkable and bring back a European trophy to N17 after 41 years. But first, Spurs must beat the Red Devils in Bilbao.
After enduring a disastrous Premier League campaign, the Lilywhites have managed to do the impossible and found their way to the Europa League final. The North London club sits 17th in the league, so winning the Europa League final would be nothing short of incredible. Club captain Heung-Min Son will also have the chance to lift his first silverware at N17.
Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son had the chance to leave North London and sign for a better club last summer. The prolific winger was offered to many clubs, but he chose to stay at N17 in the end. The 32-year-old also signed a new one-year contract extension at the club, hoping that he could managed to do what other could not. That is, win a trophy for the Lilywhites.
The South Korea international has outlined his aims for the remainder of the season and wants to create history at Spurs. Talking to The Guardian, Son said,
“The biggest reason I stayed at Tottenham was because I wanted to do something others couldn’t achieve. That’s probably why I’m where I am now. You need all the pieces to complete a puzzle. I think I’ve gathered all the other pieces to make that puzzle complete.”
The 32-year-old added,
“I’ve been missing that one most important, final piece and I’ve been trying to find it for the past 10 years. I really hope I can finally complete the puzzle this time. Every game is special and meaningful. But this game [against United] feels like an opportunity that may not come back. It feels different this time. I really want to win – more than anyone else.”
Heung-Min Son said that that he stayed at Tottenham this season was because he wanted to end his career on a high at N17 and win silverware. The prolific winger also said that winning a trophy with Spurs is the only missing part of the puzzle. Son also suggested that the game against Manchester United is an opportunity that will never come back and he intends to make the full use of it.
The Spurs No.7 is recovering from a foot injury. But much to the delight of the Spurs fans, the winger was included in the matchday squad in the last game. Heung-Min Son has now managed to score 173 goals for Tottenham, since arriving at the club in 2015. He is now fifth in the all-time top-scorer list for the Lilywhites. It is fair to say that the South Korean is a modern-day legend at the football club.
Winning the Europa League would be a fitting end for Heung-Min Son’s career at N17. The winger would end Spurs’ 17-year wait for a major trophy and it would also ensure that the Lilywhites play Champions League football next season. The Spurs No.7 will hope to end the season on a high and make history with the North London club.
