Son’s time at Tottenham is coming to an end. After more than 10 years in North London, the South Korean forward is off to LAFC and it’s one of the biggest departures in recent Spurs history. It’s been tough on James Maddison too, who spoke about how hard it is to imagine the club without Son.
Son’s departure was confirmed earlier this week and will be finalised once LAFC and Tottenham agree on the terms of the deal, reported to be around £15 million. He’s leaving behind over 170 goals, a Europa League title and countless moments of magic that made him the face of Spurs for over a decade.
For Maddison, who joined Spurs last summer, the news hit him hard personally. He told Coupang Play how Son broke the news to him and how much it affected him.
“He told me a couple of days ago that he would be leaving Tottenham this summer.
It’s weird for me. Since I joined the Premier League, even with Leicester, Sonny is Tottenham and Tottenham is Sonny. It’s weird to think about Tottenham Hotspur without Heung‑Min Son."
"It’s a little bit emotional as he is a very close friend. I love him very dearly. He is an amazing human. I just don’t have enough time or words to tell you how I actually feel about him. I cannot say enough good words about him. I will miss him very dearly, but he is my friend for life."

Their friendship became one of the most visible dynamics at the club over the past year. Maddison and Son were the two most expressive players in Postecoglou’s system and often the two most visible on the pitch. Off the pitch, their bond grew just as naturally, with both players praising each other in interviews.
They shared an emotional moment after the Europa League final win earlier this year where Son lifted his first European trophy as captain. Maddison said that was one of the best nights of his career and a big part of that was because he experienced it with Son.
Now Son is off to the States, Maddison and the rest of the Spurs squad have to get used to life without the man many saw as the soul of the club. And for Maddison, it’s not just professional, it’s personal.
