The Sounders stunned Messi and the whole MLS world in the League Cup, defeating them 3-0! After some poor form at the start of the season, many doubted how great the 2025 Sounders could be. However, this might’ve silenced all doubters and shown the MLS that the Sounders are still title contenders.

Sounders Dominance

On the stat sheet, it wasn’t actually the RAVE Green who dominated, but Inter Miami. With them having more in possession, 68% to Seattle’s 32%, passes 589 to the Sounders 296 and more corners, 8 to the Sounders 4. However, where Inter Miami dominated as a team, the Sounders players dominated as individuals, and it was their brilliance that won the game and the League Cup!

With the Sounders having more tackles, 20 to Miami’s 15, and more shots, including shots on target, with 11 total shots to Miami’s 10 and 6 of those on target, compared to Miami’s none. This was mainly due to the excellence of the Sounders defenders, with two Sounders players [De La Vega and Reed Baker-Whiting] tied with one Inter Miami player [Bright] for the most tackles in the game by a single player, at 5.

Seattle has more total players with tackles, with 8, compared to Inter Miami’s 6. In general, the RAVE Green players dominated the individual statistics and demonstrated talent and reliability. Seattle had four players with at least two shots, while Inter Miami had only two players with more than two shots. And Paul Rothrock led all players in fouls drawn with 3.

Alex Roldan’s Masterclass

The Sounders‘ victory over the most talked-about team in the MLS wouldn’t have been possible with Alex Roldan leading the way for the RAVE Green in an incredibly clutch performance in the finale. Scoring the 2nd goal of the game for the Sounders but also assisting both of Seattle’s two other goals to lead the 3-0 blowout.

The goal was actually the only shot he had all day, perfectly encapsulating the Sounders’ mentality of taking advantage of the opportunity that came to them or they created themselves. He helped out the defense with a tackle of his own as well. Contributing to both offense and defense.

A Change in Play Style?

At the start of the season, the RAVE Green had played an extremely possession-based game, usually beating teams in total passes and possession percentage, but getting dominated everywhere else, with Sounders fans complaining about how boring they are to watch. This, if you somehow didn’t notice, is the total opposite of how the Sounders played in the League Cup final against Inter Miami. Where they let the Florida-based team have more passes and possession, creating more opportunities for themselves.

But is this a response to Miami or a new trend for the Seattle-based team? Based on the last three matches against fellow MLS clubs, it’s clear that the Sounders are much more flexible as a team compared to the start of the year. With them having even less possession in our 2-0 win against the LA Galaxy and shooting as much as possible, they took 13 total shots compared to the Galaxy’s 9. Then, in our 1-0 loss to Minnesota United, Seattle held possession for 70.7% of the game. Although aggressive shot-making and creating opportunities are part of the game plan, they had 15 total shots, five more than Minnesota.

And in our 5-2 blowout win against Sporting KC, we were much more balanced in possession, holding 52.3%, while being the most aggressive with shots, with 21 total. Something to note is that the Seattle-based team’s results are best when they let the other team have the ball and take aggressive action to create their own chances. Letting players like De La Vega and Rusnák create and have more freedom with their shot selection, so perhaps it’s best for them to play like this come playoff time. Thanks a bunch for reading!
