Spain enters the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup looking every bit like one of the tournament favorites as it prepares for a Round of 32 showdown with Austria. Luis de la Fuente’s side advanced from Group H unbeaten, winning two matches and drawing one while conceding no goals.
La Roja topped the group after defeating Uruguay 1-0 in its final group-stage match and will now try to take another step toward a second World Cup title against an Austrian team that fought its way into the knockout rounds.
Much of Spain’s hopes rest on the shoulders of 18-year-old Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal.
Despite being one of the world’s brightest young stars, Yamal has been carefully managed throughout the tournament after recovering from a hamstring injury, playing just 141 minutes across the three group-stage matches. He still made his mark with one goal against Saudi Arabia and flashed his creativity and pace.
There had been lingering questions over whether Yamal was fully fit heading into the knockout rounds, but De la Fuente delivered an encouraging update on Wednesday.
“He’s ready to play for as long as is required of him. We’ve been very cautious with his playing time, as we are with all injuries. But he’s doing very well. We will see if he plays,” the Spain boss said, adding that the teenager is physically capable of playing a full match if needed.
Spain announced its starting lineup ahead of the game, with Yamal set to play at his traditional right-wing position.

Yamal’s availability will be key to Spain’s World Cup aspirations. The winger announced himself on the world stage during Spain’s triumphant UEFA Euro 2024 campaign, where he emerged as the tournament’s breakout star and helped lead La Roja to the title. Spain will again depend heavily on his ability to unlock defenses, especially with Nico Williams ruled out of the Austria clash because of an adductor injury suffered against Uruguay.
Spain and Austria will meet at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET as Spain looks to book its place in the Round of 16.
