Atletico Madrid and Villarreal are considering signing Tottenham Hotspur target Julian Brandt on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund next summer

Tottenham Hotspur are growing as a team under Thomas Frank as they find themselves just a point behind the fourth spot in the Premier League table. However, despite the positive performances, there are still some key areas that need to be addressed if Spurs are to build on their momentum.

The north London club must bring in a new No.10 in the forthcoming January transfer window to complement Mohammed Kudus in the attack. Xavi Simons is yet to live up to the expectations of the club bosses after arriving from RB Leipzig in the summer, so the creative hole in the squad created by James Maddison’s season-ending injury is practically yet to be addressed.

In Maddison’s absence, Thomas Frank has experimented with Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr in the No.10 role. While both Bergvall and Sarr are talented young and hardworking players, they lack the incisiveness on the ball required to carve open rigid defences. As Frank heavily relies on his midfielders to create chances and link-up with the attackers, it is vital Spurs invest in a creative force that would be ready to make an instant impact in the second half of the campaign.

Tottenham-linked Julian Brandt wanted by La Liga duo

Spurs have reportedly shown an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund playmaker Julian Brandt. They view him as a potential option to solve the well-documented creativity issue in Frank’s squad.

Julian Brandt has served Borussia Dortmund very well since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2019. The Germany international has made 279 appearances for the Black and Yellows, scoring 50 goals and providing 68 assists. However, he is out of contract at the end of the season and that has not gone unnoticed across the continent.

The early signs suggest the 29-year-old is not going to renew terms and remains in stalled negotiations with Dortmund. This has provided an opportunity for other clubs across Europe to now closely monitor his situation.

According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal are eyeing a move for Brandt on a potential free transfer from Dortmund next summer. Atletico Madrid appears to be one of the clubs keeping close tabs on his situation, while Villarreal have also been linked with the player. Both the Spanish clubs view the German as a present and future investment to strengthen their midfield.

Dortmund are losing hope to renew Brandt’s contract with every passing day. The Bundesliga outfit have made their new contract offer which involves a pay cut, leaving the ball in the creative midfielder’s court. Now that clubs are starting to circle, the report adds they are now contemplating whether to keep him until the end of the season or sell in January.

Tottenham must test Dortmund’s resolve for Brandt in January

Both Atletico Madrid and Villarreal are planning to snap up Brandt on a free transfer when his contract at Dortmund expires in June 2030. If Tottenham are to have a chance of signing Brandt, they cannot afford to wait that long and get embroiled in a transfer war with Atletico Madrid and Villarreal. It’d wise from their part to test Dortmund’s resolve with a cheeky bid in January.

Brandt has the pedigree to step straight into Tottenham’s system. The Germany international’s ability to create chances and chip in with goals in both Bundesliga and the Champions League makes him an attractive option for the north Londoners, who are desperate to add more cutting edge in the attacking third.

The Hotspur Way chiefs must back Frank’s vision, and landing a proven, top playmaker in Brandt during the winter window could prove decisive in their push for a top-four finish and a strong European run.
