Tottenham Hotspur have been compounding on their transfer strategy to sign highly regarded young players at Hotspur Way. And recently they have been linked with River Plate centre-back Lautaro Rivero, given the performances he has been putting in for the South American giants.
But while the North Londoners still look to ascertain their interest in the 22-year-old, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have stepped up their pursuit of signing the defender. There are reports in Spain (via Fichajes) claiming that Los Colchoneros are preparing a €20 million bid plus bonuses to secure Rivero’s signature.
The 22-year-old has been impressing for River Plate after he came back from his loan. And these performances pushed the Argentine giants to hand him a new contract with a mammoth €100 million release clause. But the report states that a possible €20 million bid with decent incentives and a sell-on clause can do the job for Atleti.
It is just like many transfers that we watch in Spanish football. And the logic behind it makes sense. You let Diego Simeone develop him into his potential in a controlled defensive system, and a possible hefty money sale could earn River Plate a respected fee with sell-on incentives.
But Atletico Madrid are not alone in pursuit of his services. The trio of Real Madrid, Tottenham and Chelsea are also interested. So the last thing that Atletico will have is a clear road to his signatures, especially for such a cheap fee.
The left-footed centre back has been showing quite a lot of his traits in South American football. And given that he is technically quite apt, Thomas Frank would love to have him in the squad. For the reported price, Tottenham should definitely be on the table in a bid to bring Lautaro Rivero to Europe.
While there are a lot of young left-footed centre backs in the ranks at Hotspur Way, with the likes of Luka Vuskovic and Radu Dragusin still waiting on the touchline for their opportunities, Tottenham have been looking to prepare for the long term.
Given how the North Londoners have prioritised bringing in highly regarded young players and developing them through the corridors at Hotspur Way, he does look like a proper Lilywhites buy (for the last couple of years or so). And this is where signing someone like Rivero makes a lot of sense.
