Tottenham are exploring the option of re-signing Mathys Tel on another loan from Bayern Munich as they plan their summer squad rebuild

Tottenham’s inconsistent season will certainly be one to remember. The club managed to end it successfully by lifting the Europa League trophy, a refreshing result following a dismal domestic season. Spurs are preparing for the coming season and the summer transfer window is giving the club a great opportunity to make significant changes to the squad. Among last season’s arrivals, Mathys Tel who spent the later stages of last season on loan from Bayern Munich was the most impressive during his time in North-London. Spurs are now reportedly negotiating with Bayern to make him a permanent signing.

The Frenchman was loaned out to Tottenham on a six-month loan from Bayern during the January 2025 transfer window. The 19-year-old showed flashes of a talent that is undeniable but couldn’t quite settle into the team completely as the team struggled to find their form in the Premier League. He totalled 20 appearances in four different competitions, with four goal contributions in just more than 1,000 minutes.

Although Tel gave a good effort and positive attitude, those numbers do not show a return for that hefty price tag. Nevertheless, Tottenham must see something in Tel because, and according to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the club is interested in keeping Tel for next season after the loan spell.

Everything lies with Ange’s future at the Club

Mathys Tel wasn’t a regular in Ange Postecoglou’s preferred starting XI, which limited his involvement in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph. However, he still played a part—delivering the corner that led to Dominic Solanke’s decisive goal in the second-leg semi-final win over Bodo/Glimt.

According to Florian Plettenberg as relayed by Football.London, recent negotiations between Spurs and Bayern Munich have introduced a new proposal: another loan move for Tel, this time with an obligation-to-buy clause. Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl has reportedly been in intense discussions with Tottenham to finalise a solution.

This arrangement could benefit both sides. Tottenham would retain Tel for another season, giving them nine more months to develop his game before committing to a full transfer—freeing up funds for signings in other positions this summer. Meanwhile, Bayern would secure a guaranteed transfer fee along with a loan payment.

Still, with uncertainty surrounding Ange Postecoglou’s future, it remains unclear whether this deal would ultimately prove wise for Spurs.

Despite guiding Tottenham to a European trophy, Ange Postecoglou’s future remains uncertain, with chairman Daniel Levy set to make the final call. Two weeks have passed since that triumph, and while the transfer window is now open, the club has yet to issue any official update on the manager’s position—only confirming the departures of two individuals so far.
