The sacking of Ange Postecoglou felt inevitable, but at the same time, one got a sense that it might not be beyond all reason if he somehow managed to stay for a third stab at it. The noises from a good few of the players were positive, and indeed, it was Team Talk that revealed that, in particular, Cristian Romero, Micky Van de Ven and Dejan Kulusevski – all ‘adored’ Postecoglou and will ‘would be livid’ with how he was treated.
Fast-forward to the summer transfer activity, and all the chitter chatter of any consequence surrounding Tottenham is focused on Romero, who has made numerous social media posts that sounded an awful lot like goodbye, as opposed to general updates, and it certainly backs up the assertion that he was desperately unhappy with the departure of the Australian.
Spanish outlet Finchales reports that Cuti Romero would not just be another reinforcement, but the pillar on which Simeone wants to build the new project, and more specifically, that:
Atlético are convinced: they want the leader of the defence and are willing to pay for it.
It seems that Atlético are closing in on the magic number of €70 million that Tottenham appears to want to trade at, and a deal might get underway in a matter of days; once Levy & Co have been satisfied.
It comes as little surprise to those following the club closely that this is a player who has eyes elsewhere. Yes, he has been headhunted, but he’s played along quite generously. My inclination would be to squeeze every last penny out of the Spanish and which him well as we do so.
Loyalty is a bizarre concept in modern football. Far too many players are showered in appreciation for simply doing the job, and of course collecting vast sums of cash along the way. Cuti is a special player, a cut above, but at what point was he going to be a routinely special player for Spurs? Grab the cash and reinvest.
