St Mirren to sign Manchester United centre-back

Manchester United’s centre-back options have come under scrutiny following a testing start to the Premier League campaign.

Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven started together at the back in the club’s opening-day defeat to Hull City.

Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined through injury, while Lisandro Martinez only recently returned from World Cup duty with Argentina.

That reshuffle has extended down through United’s squad, with opportunities becoming harder to come by even at development level.

One defender’s path to regular football now appears to lie away from Old Trafford entirely.

St Mirren set to sign Manchester United defender

According to BBC Sport, Louis Jackson is in talks with Scottish Premiership side St Mirren, with a medical scheduled for Thursday ahead of a permanent move.

The 20-year-old, born in Oldham but raised in Trafford, became a season-ticket holder at Old Trafford at just five years old.

He joined United’s academy setup at ten and went on to become the youngest player ever to feature for the club’s Under-23 side, doing so at 15.

Louis Jackson was part of the United youth team that won the FA Youth Cup in 2022, starting in the final against Nottingham Forest.

He represents Scotland at youth level, having progressed through the country’s Under-17s, Under-18s and Under-19s.

Jackson was first named on United’s senior matchday bench for the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City at Wembley in 2024.

He joined Tranmere Rovers on loan in February last year but failed to make a first-team appearance during his time at Prenton Park.

A season-long loan at National League side Solihull Moors followed in August 2025, before he was recalled to Carrington in January.

St Mirren also secured the loan signing of former Aberdeen defender Calvin Ramsay from Liverpool earlier this week, adding further defensive reinforcement.

Jackson’s proposed move offers a fresh opportunity to build senior experience following two stop-start loan spells south of the border.

It is understood any deal will include sell-on and buy-back clauses, giving United the chance to benefit financially from his progress in Scotland.

Scottish football has proven a popular pathway for several of United’s academy defenders in recent years, offering regular senior minutes.

Should Thursday’s medical go smoothly, Jackson is expected to complete his move before the transfer window closes.
