Richarlison provided the crucial assist for Archie Gray’s goal that helped Tottenham beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The game at Selhurst Park was far from classic, and Tottenham Hotspur had to dig deep, defend in numbers and make right decisions of the ball for large parts to win the contest via Archie Gray’s first-half header.
Crystal Palace were the better side of the two in all departs for most of the game, but lacked cutting edge in the final third. Spurs got a goal from Archie Gray minutes before half-time to secure an important away victory, allowing the club to finish the year in 11th place in the Premier League table.
Apart from Gray’s goal, Tottenham twice had the ball in the back of the net via Richarlison. However, he was unlucky on both occasions as it was ruled offside after a VAR review. The Brazilian worked extremely hard off the ball, pressed well and was a real handful for the Crystal Palace defence.
Richarlison was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet after having two goals ruled out for offside by VAR, but he did get the vital assist for Gray’s goal. He turned provider, flicking on Randal Kolo Muani’s knockdown from a Pedro Porro corner for Gray to nod in past Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, silencing the home crowd in the process. And by doing so, the 28-year-old entered a special club in the Premier League this season.
According to StatMuse FC on X, Richarlison is one of only seven players with 10+ goals and assists in the Premier League. He has registered seven goals and three assists in 18 league outings under Thomas Frank. The centre-forward is now joint-third in the Premier League for the most goal contributions, sitting on 10 with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike.
Richarlison has been Thomas Frank’s first-choice No.9, thanks mainly to Dominic Solanke’s injury-ravaged season and deadline day signing Randal Kolo Muani’s slow start to life in N17. After a barren run, the South American seems to have rediscovered his scoring touch in recent weeks.
The forward has netted four goals in his last eight league outings, and when he could not find himself on the scoresheet against Palace, Richarlison came up with the all-important assist. Supporters have been critical of the Brazil international in the last two years for his lack of consistency and inability to stay fit, but this season, he has actually stepped up to the plate.
This shows the work he has put in behind the scenes to keep himself fit, and he was certainly helped by Frank’s man-management skills. The Danish tactician has given the 28-year-old confidence to express himself freely, and Solanke’s injury has only benefited his game time.
The majority of Tottenham fans who were desperate to see the back of Richarlison must now be praying the club doesn’t listen to offers for him in January amid interest from an MLS club.
