Streaky EPL performer returns to MLS' Atlanta United

Newcastle United are moving on from Paraguayan playmaker Miguel Almiron in a deal that would return him to Atlanta United of Major League Soccer.

Newcastle bought Almiron for a club-record $26M fee in 2019 after two impressive seasons in America.

In his first stint with Atlanta United, he led the team in assists, was named MLS Newcomer of the Year, was voted an MLS All-Star and was a finalist for the MLS MVP award in 2017. He helped lead Atlanta to the 2018 MLS Cup in just its second year of existence the following season, scoring 22 total goals for the club.

Almiron’s English tenure was up and down. He saw most success in the 2022-23 season, scoring 11 goals and helping the club into the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

Poetically, he scored the club’s first goal back in Europe’s premier competition on October 4, 2023.

Almiron only has three goals in the two seasons since and one start in the last 10 months. Other midfield talent has emerged or been bought by the Saudi Arabia ownership group. Lost in the depth of the roster, Atlanta will be a good move for both clubs and player.

At 30 years old, Almiron likely won’t return to the prolific form from eight years ago. However, he can be a valuable player in the locker room as Atlanta looks to avenge a conference semifinal loss that knocked it out of the MLS playoffs. Fans are excited to see the popular player return to the club he helped elevate.

While not earning back all of the $26M it paid for Almiron, Newcastle, which may come under scrutiny for its financial practices, can balance its wage structure. Currently sixth in the Premier League, European competition is a real possibility for the club next season.
