The Premier League is back this weekend following the international break, with Sunderland travelling to the capital on Saturday to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Despite two victories in their first three games, the Black Cats will be hoping to collect their first away points of the season after a disappointing away loss at Burnley, while the Eagles will be looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season, which has included progress in the UEFA Conference League.
Here is our Sunderland predicted lineup, plus the latest team news and current betting odds.
The Black Cats came from behind and also saw their goalkeeper Robin Roefs save a penalty to secure the three points in dramatic fashion. Sunderland are known now for their late goals, and they did it again in this fixture.
Brentford took the lead after they had missed a penalty with just 15 minutes to go, but just five minutes later, Enzo Le Fee, on his first start of the season, converted a penalty for Sunderland. However, the home side were not content with just a point and attacked for the win.
On 95 minutes, super sub Wilson Isidor met Granit Xhaka’s cross to head home the winner and once again produce last-minute pandemonium amongst fans.
Starting Lineup: Roefs, Hume, Mukiele, Alderete, Reinildo, Xhaka, Diarra, Sidiki, Talbi, Le Fee, Mayenda
Dan Ballard, Luke O’Nien, Dennis Cirkin, Leo Hjelde, Aji Alese, and Romaine Mundle will all miss the trip to London. Defender Ballard picked up a groin injury at Burnley but is expected to be back in time for the Aston Villa game on September 21st. Luke O’Nien had surgery on a dislocated shoulder he suffered in the playoff final, but should also be in contention against Villa.
Cirkin, Hjelde, Alese, and Mundle are not expected to be fit until next month.
Sunderland completed the signings of three players on transfer deadline day, and they could feature against Palace, but the Black Cats’ head coach admits it will be more than likely from the bench if they are selected. During his pre-match press conference, he said: “I don’t know for Bertrand, because Bertrand was with his national team during this period. So we’ll see this afternoon.
“For the two others, they seem okay. Probably not ready for 90 minutes right now, but they should be ready quickly, I think.”
The Eagles had an injury boost ahead of this game, with both Adam Wharton and Ismaila Sarr’s injuries not as bad as they first believed. However, the pair, who suffered injuries in their last game at Aston Villa, which forced them to pull out of international duty, are unlikely to feature this weekend. Yeremy Pino, who also withdrew from internationals due to injury, could feature if passed fit. Summer signings Christantus Uche and Jaydee Canvot could make their debuts.
The words written across the city that sum up the people of Sunderland and their club. Never give up and never give in until the very end. In recent times, The Black Cats have proved that they will keep going until the very end. Late winners in the playoff semi-final and final, and more recently the victory over Brentford, show that this team and their passionate fans will not give up until the whistle blows for a final time.
Head coach Regis Le Bris talked about this mentality in the build-up to this weekend’s fixture. He said: “It is really positive to have this mindset of going until the end,” he said: “It is not easy to understand why, but the personality of the players, the consistency of the game model, the quality of the squad, and the connection with our fans – we have many elements to explain this mentality until the end.
“If we can work like that, no matter the scenario or the circumstances after conceding a goal, we will keep pushing, keep working, and keep believing we can win. It is really positive for the squad.”
Wilson Isidor is predicted to start up front. The striker has scored twice after coming on as a substitute in the past three games, including a last-minute winner against Brentford.
