Teddy Sheringham believes Tottenham is the ideal destination for Man United transfer target

Manchester United’s search for a reliable striker has dragged on for years and the problem still has no clear solution. With the transfer market short of genuine world-class centre forwards, Harry Kane’s name was always going to surface once rumours of a Premier League return began to swirl.

Kane left Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 for £86.4m, ending a long chapter in North London. He has since thrived in Germany, scoring 98 goals and supplying 29 assists in just 103 appearances for Bayern. Vincent Kompany’s side looks strong again, but talk of the England captain returning home refuses to die down, particularly with a £54m release clause due to become active in January 2026.

For United, the temptation is obvious. They have lacked a consistent goalscorer since the days of Robin van Persie, with every new arrival flattering to deceive or struggling to settle. Bar Cristiano Ronaldo. He was hard done by. The club has invested heavily in attacking talent, yet the balance remains off and the team often labours without a focal point. Kane, even at 32, would instantly raise the level. His hold-up play, finishing and creativity would offer a platform for others, and his experience would provide the leadership that a youthful squad still lacks.

Should United sign Kane?

Teddy Sheringham, who knows both Tottenham and United intimately, was asked recently about Kane’s future. He admitted that United could do with a player of Kane’s profile, but felt Spurs would be the more likely destination if the forward decided to return to England. Sheringham described Tottenham as the obvious choice, pointing out that supporters would welcome him back without hesitation. Here is what he had to say via Football London.

“The way it’s looking for Manchester United, they still could do with a player like him, but I think it’s unlikely that they would get him. For me, Tottenham would be the obvious choice.”

“I couldn’t see why the club wouldn’t want him back if that became a possibility, and I’m sure the Spurs supporters would welcome him back with open arms.”

That is where the dilemma lies for United. Kane’s emotional ties to Spurs are deep, with 435 appearances, 280 goals and 63 assists during his time at Hotspur Lane. He is their record scorer, their former captain, and the heartbeat of the side for nearly a decade. If he does decide to leave Germany, sentiment and unfinished business may guide him back to north London.

Even so, United cannot ignore the possibility. The striker market is dry and top forwards rarely become available, certainly not at the level Kane has maintained throughout his career. At £54m in 2026, the deal would also represent rare value for a player of his quality.

Financially and tactically, it makes sense. The only question is whether Kane himself would choose Old Trafford over the familiar embrace of Tottenham.

Until then, United’s problems up front remain unresolved. Sheringham may be right that Spurs lead the race, but if the chance arises, United must be ready to act. Kane may not be the long-term solution, yet for a side desperate for goals and consistency, he could be the short-term spark that changes everything.
