Although the 2026 World Cup Final is a year away, fans of many national teams are already thinking about how their team should line up during the tournament next summer. This includes USMNT fans and legends, who believe the team has a chance to make an impact.
The USMNT is under pressure as they did not win the 2025 Gold Cup, a tournament they are expected to win. This summer, Mauricio Pochettino did not call up a squad with players expected to play in the 2026 World Cup.
A couple of players have impressed in order to be called up for the final roster for next summer's big tournament. Former USMNT player Alexi Lalas gave his preferred starting XI for the 2026 World Cup after what he saw from the Gold Cup.
Among the big names in his starting lineup is Tyler Adams, who played in the Gold Cup but did not impress the USMNT legend as before.
The Bournemouth midfielder is expected to be on the roster for the World Cup, but to Lalas, a starting position is not guaranteed at the moment.
When Lalas picked his opinion's best starting XI in the USMNT, he included Adams in the midfield, but he has his eyes on other players for that position. He mentioned that Adams' performance at the Gold Cup is worrying if it continues towards the World Cup.
Alexi Lalas: "If Tyler Adams is the same player that we saw in this Gold Cup come the World Cup, that is a problem. For us as a team and that's a problem for Tyler Adams. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure you start him."
His lineup included players like Malik Tillman as the attacking midfielder of the team, along with Weston McKennie in the midfield.
Lalas also believes Diego Luna could be a realistic option as a starter over Adams since he brings good defensive attributes along with his attacking ones.
Tyler Adams played five games for the USMNT in the Gold Cup this summer. He missed the USMNT's first game in the group stage against Trinidad and Tobago.
He only played one game entirely, which was the quarterfinal against Costa Rica. Adams was subbed off in the semifinal against Guatemala and the final against Mexico.
Despite captaining the team in the 2022 World Cup, Pochettino picked Tim Ream as the captain for the Gold Cup.
