In ice hockey, netting a hat trick is impressive. In football, it’s remarkable. For a footballer to score three goals in a single game is a significant feat, especially at the Premier League level. Getting one hat trick? That’s tricky enough. Multiple hat tricks? That’s rarified air. Fifteen players have potted at least five hat tricks in Premier League contests. These are those goal-scoring machines.

The season before the birth of the Premier League, Wright led the First Division in goals for Arsenal. That would be his only domestic Golden Boot, but he still scored plenty of Premier League goals for the Gunners, clearly. While his status as the best goal scorer in Arsenal history would be usurped by a guy with a few more hat tricks, Wright had five Premier League hat tricks, the last of which came in 1997.

One of the top goal scorers in Premier League history, Cole did bounce around. He exploded onto the scene with Newcastle by scoring 34 goals in the 1993-94 season (back in the days of the 42-game schedule) which earned the attention of Manchester United. While he couldn’t be the sole focal point with United, he was a regular double-digit goal scorer who played for a few title-winning teams. Cole too had five hat tricks, but the last came in 1999. To put that in context, he played his last Premier League game in 2007.

As Cole was on the wane, in came van Nistelrooy to take up the mantle. When it comes to the Dutch striker’s numbers, one must remember he did not play in the Premier League for all that long. He spent five seasons with Manchester United before moving on to Real Madrid. Other than 2004-05, when injuries limited him to 17 Premier League games, he scored at least 20 goals every season. Scoring in bunches helped, as he also had five hat tricks.

That’s right. Berbatov is among the players with five Premier League hat tricks. Though not viewed on the level of his counterparts on this list, he was no slouch when it came to scoring goals. The best Bulgarian footballer of the modernized era of the game, Berbatov was calm and languid on the pitch, which some mistook for apathy. You don’t score as many goals as the striker did if you don’t really care out there. He never had a hat trick with Fulham, his last Premier League team, but his time with Spurs and Man United was a different story.

Talk about a move that paid off. In his final season with Arsenal, van Persie won the Golden Boot. The next season, his first with Manchester United, he once again won the Golden Boot. While he would add 22 goals over his final two seasons with United, perhaps it is fitting his last of five Premier League hat tricks came in his first season with the club when he proved he was worth the acquisition in short order.

Sterling is the last of the five-timers, and also the first active Premier League player on this list. However, while he could in theory add a sixth hat trick, it seems unlikely. As you may have noted, even top-level goal scorers tend to notch their final hat trick years before they hang up the cleats. Sterling, now 30, had his most-recent hat trick in February of 2022. That was in his last season with Manchester City, and he’s now on the books for Chelsea and on loan to Arsenal.

The only player with exactly six hat tricks in Premier League history, Suarez is enjoying a playing retirement hanging out with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami. What makes the Uruguayan incredible — aside from his propensity toward biting opponents — is the brief amount of time it took him to accrue these hat tricks. Suarez only played three full Premier League seasons and he still tallied six hat tricks! He then, of course, moved to Barcelona, where there were plenty more goals to come.

Rooney is one of three players with over 200 Premier League goals, but he’s the only player with exactly seven hat tricks. The English striker first popped as a teenager with his local club, Everton, but of course Rooney is best known for his time with Manchester United. The club won five titles during Rooney’s time there, and he became United’s all-time top goal scorer, which is really saying something. Even more remarkably, he did that while never leading the Premier League in goals. Maybe he should have bunched these hat tricks together a bit?

There are four players with eight Premier League hat tricks, but Owen got there first. Of these four. Two guys with more hat tricks got to eight sooner. Injuries would hamper Owen’s career, but not enough to keep him from being an excellent striker for club and country at the turn of the millennium. Yes, seven of these eight hat tricks came in the late ‘90s and early 2000s with Liverpool. He notched one with Newcastle United in 2005, but while he would gut it out until the 2012-13 season, he was on the periphery by and large.

Henry, as you likely know, is the one who replaced Wright as Arsenal’s all-time leading goal scorer. The Frenchman was a force with the Gunners during their glory days under Arsene Wenger. Not only was he part of the “Invincibles,” he led the Premier League in goals a whopping four times. That is a record, though one that Mohamed Salah could tie.

Had Kane not left Spurs for Bayern Munich, he may have more than eight hat tricks. As his goal-scoring numbers in Germany have shown, he hasn’t exactly lost his knack for putting the ball in the net. Leaving the Premier League for the Bundesliga also means Kane sits in second in total Premier League goals, though given that he’s 47 behind the leader he might not have caught up anyway. Yes, the leader is yet to be named, which is why all the mystery.

Things could go awry, but Haaland will likely add to his career hat tricks, and has a decent shot to end up with the most Premier League hat tricks. He’s on eight at the moment, but he hasn’t even finished his third Premier League season yet, and he’s only 24. If the Norwegian striker doesn’t at least get to double digits, we’ll be surprised.

Every single one of Fowler’s nine hat tricks came during his initial run with Liverpool. With Leeds, Man City, and even in his return to Liverpool, Fowler wasn’t able to add to those nine. Of course, the takeaway then should probably be that he had nine hat tricks in eight seasons at Anfield. That’s quite the run.

Behold, the Premier League’s all-time goal scorer! That’s with his first five seasons, and first 23 top-flight goals, coming in the days before the Premier League. Shearer was still able to get to 260 goals during the Premier League era. What’s notable is that the last of Shearer’s 11 hat tricks came at the start of the 1999-2000 season. He’d play six Premier League seasons after that, and he’d have two 20-goal seasons after that, but there were no hat tricks to be found.

Atop the list, though, we have Sergio Aguero. The Argentine was impressive with Atletico Madrid in Spain, but he took his game to a new level in England with Manchester City. The year he arrived was the year City won its first Premier League title, with many more to follow during his era. Of course, Aguero is also the one who scored the fabled goal to power the club to that title on the final day of the season. That was one goal, not three. However, he would tally a whopping 12 hat tricks with the club, which will stand as the Premier League record until if and when Haaland beats it. And if Haaland doesn’t do it, nobody else is even close to being in the running.
