This time last season, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was without a club, and he was training with Arsenal in order to stay fit.
Then Martin O’Neill returned for a second time at Celtic after the nightmare spell of Wilfried Nancy, and he pushed to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain on a six-month contract.
Celtic proceeded to win the domestic double, with the former England international getting mixed game time, but he was still re-signed in the summer when O’Neill was confirmed as boss.
With a pre-season under his belt, many felt that Oxlade-Chamberlain would play an important but efficient role for the champions of Scotland, but it has been far from the case.

What’s baffling is that in recent times, O’Neill has rotated his goalkeepers and cited Celtic’s heavy schedule as a reason behind it.
Yet, during Celtic’s last two matches, against Celta Vigo in the Europa League and Hibernian in the Premiership, there has only been one midfield change, and that was Mika Baur going off with ten minutes left on the clock in Europe.
Despite Celtic’s midfield looking leggy, struggling without the ball, and being forced back by their opponents, the midfield hasn’t been rotated or refreshed, as Callum McGregor, Benjamin Nygren and Mika Baur have continued to start and play.
In the meantime, Oxlade-Chamberlain has continued to warm the bench, and you begin to wonder: What is the point of having him at the club?
| Player | Games | Starts | Total minutes |
| Callum McGregor | 16 | 16 | 1,440 |
| Benjamin Nygren | 17 | 15 | 1,184 |
| Mika Baur | 15 | 13 | 1,099 |
| Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain | 6 | 3 | 289 |
The three games Oxlade-Chamberlain has started were against Dundee United in the League Cup, and two home games against Falkirk and Aberdeen in the Premiership.
The 33-year-old played around an hour or more in each of those matches, but hasn’t been trusted to start since, despite his 100% record.
| Game | Result | Total minutes |
| Vs Dundee United (League Cup) | 4-0 win | 59 |
| Vs Falkirk (Premiership) | 2-1 win | 78 |
| Vs Aberdeen (Premiership) | 3-0 win | 63 |
It’s pretty clear that McGregor needs to go in and out of the XI to help him maintain his form and also provide Oxlade-Chamberlain with more minutes.
One of our TalkingPoints users has already alluded to that, and it’s time to make that call, starting with Celtic’s Premiership clash against Dundee United on Wednesday.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has already played against Dundee United, proving himself with a very calm performance, so why not give him a chance and rest McGregor for the weekend?
Not forgetting that the Hoops, who have lost their opening three Europa League matches, face Beşiktaş in the Europa League next Thursday.
