The clubs with multiple finishes in the top four of the Premier League table

Winning the Premier League is the ultimate goal, but finishing in the top four has long been almost as important. That has been the threshold for making it into the Champions League for many years. In fact, this has solidified the import of a “top four” finish for Premier League clubs. If you feel like the same clubs have done that time and time again, well, you’re right. Only 10 clubs have finished in the top four of the table multiple times. Although, a preemptive shout out to Nottingham Forest, who is likely to join that group at the end of the 2024-25 season. Here are the 10 clubs to do it thus far.

Leeds United

Leeds has finished in the top four three times, but it hasn’t had as many opportunities as other clubs. It has spent much of the last 30 years playing below the Premier League level, and certainly the club’s ‘70s heyday was well before the establishment of the Premier League. In fact, Leeds United has the distinction of being the last team to win the First Division title back when it was the top flight before the debut of the Premier League in 1992.

Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn, like Leeds, is currently down in the Championship. Unlike Leeds, the Rovers have no chance of being promoted at the end of the 2024-25 campaign. However, Blackburn also can say something most clubs can’t: It has a Premier League title, earning it in the 1994-95 season. The club also finished as a runner-up once out of its three top-four finishes.

Aston Villa

Villa is the last of the three clubs sitting on three finishes in the top four, but is the only one currently playing in the Premier League. Not that the club has been there season in and season out, as it too has spent some time in the Championship. A fourth-place finish in the 2023-24 season paved the way for Villa to enjoy a surprise Champions League run in 2024-25, the club's first appearance in that tournament in decades. Also, a bit of an odd statistical anomaly: Villa is the only one of these 10 clubs with a collective negative goal differential in Premier League history.

Newcastle United

Now well-monied, even by the standards of English football, Newcastle United doubles up the previous three teams. It has six top-four finishes, twice finishing fourth, twice third, and twice second. Yes, notably none of those are first place, but that’s still not too shabby. With the cash the club has now, a title will likely be desired by ownership, and fans, in time.

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs are one of the clubs that has played in every single Premier League season. They are also the ultimate bridesmaids, at least as far as this list is concerned. Though the London club has finished in the top four seven times, it has also finished fifth a whopping six times. That is the most of any club.

Manchester City

Manchester City has not played in every Premier League season, but obviously things have changed as of late. The days of finishing mid-table are over. Not only has City earned a robust 14 top-four finishes, it has won the Premier League title eight times. That is the second-most of any club.

Chelsea

Chelsea was a good club before the influx of cash that arrived with Roman Abramovich, which is why it is one of the clubs to never be relegated from the Premier League, but certainly things went to a new level once Chelsea became particularly wealthy. They have won five Premier League titles, and two Champions League, and all of those trophies have come since 2005. In total, Chelsea has 19 seasons that ended with a top-four finish to its name.

Liverpool

This is the first club here for which we can confidently say another top-four finish will be added when the 2024-25 campaign is over. Liverpool is the heavy favorite to win the title, which has actually been rare in the Premier League era. A title would be only the club’s second. The Reds more commonly sit just outside truly being competitive. Liverpool has seven third-place finishes and seven fourth-place finishes out of 20 top-four finishes. Both are the most for any club.

Arsenal

The Gunners will, like Liverpool, be finishing in the top four, and thus get a step closer to being first on this list. Arsenal has 23 top-four finishes. During the glory days of Arsene Wenger it won three titles, including the fabled “Invincibles,” but the club is also kings of the silver medal. Arsenal has finished second in the Premier League eight times, with a ninth likely on the way this season.

Well, Man United fans, at least here’s a chance to relive some glory. Yes, it doesn’t feel like another top-four finish is on the horizon, but Manchester United has done that plenty. It has 26 finishes in the top four, and that’s with only a single fourth-place finish. The club has finished second seven times, but also won the Premier League a whopping 13 times. Where have you gone, Sir Alex Ferguson?
