Chaos continues to follow Manchester United at the worst possible time of the season, and now defensive problems are threatening to derail their Champions League push completely.
After a costly dismissal against Bournemouth, Harry Maguire has been hit with another setback that rules him out of the crucial clash against Chelsea.
The 33-year-old will miss the trip to Stamford Bridge after being handed an additional one-match suspension, with the Football Association upholding an improper conduct charge stemming from his reaction to being sent off.
An independent regulatory commission confirmed the punishment after reviewing the incident involving fourth official Matt Donohue, where Maguire was found to have crossed the line following his dismissal.
A statement from The Football Association (FA) on their website read: “It is alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal.”
Harry Maguire had already served a suspension in United’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds United, but this latest ruling ensures he will now also sit out one of the biggest games of the run-in.
That dismissal came after referee Stuart Attwell sent him off for denying a goalscoring opportunity against Evanilson.
To make matters worse, Harry Maguire has admitted to the charge and has also been fined £30,000, adding another chapter to what has been a turbulent few weeks for the centre-back.
His absence now leaves Manchester United dangerously short at the back, especially with Lisandro Martinez also unavailable following his red card against Leeds for the hair-pulling incident involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
With Matthijs de Ligt still not ready to return from injury, head coach Michael Carrick is now expected to rely on a youthful defensive pairing of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.
United’s defensive crisis comes at a time when every point matters, with Carrick’s side still fighting to secure Champions League football for next season.
Maguire’s recent run perfectly sums up the rollercoaster nature of his last few weeks, as the defender has gone from near uncertainty about his future to becoming one of the central figures in Manchester United’s resurgence under Michael Carrick, only to now find himself back in the spotlight for the wrong reasons again.
At the start of the year, Maguire’s position at Old Trafford looked far from secure after falling down the pecking order under the previous regime, but Carrick’s arrival in January completely changed his trajectory, restoring him as a regular starter and leader in the backline during United’s climb up the table.
That resurgence didn’t go unnoticed, as his consistent performances earned him a recall to the England national football team setup for the first time in nearly two years, putting him back in contention for the 2026 World Cup squad despite intense competition for places.
Almost immediately after that, United moved to secure his future, handing the 33-year-old a new contract running until 2027 with an option for a further year, a deal he even accepted on reduced wages to remain part of the club’s long-term plans.
That decision highlighted just how much his importance had grown again, with the club valuing not only his performances but also his leadership within a squad that is transitioning and pushing for Champions League qualification.
However, just as things seemed to stabilise, the narrative has flipped again, with his red card against Bournemouth, the misconduct charge for his reaction, and now this additional suspension dragging him back into controversy at a crucial stage of the season.
It’s that contrast that defines his season, from being written off, to becoming vital again, to now being unavailable when United arguably need his experience the most.
